Cars that are equipped with OBD2 (on board diagnostics - 2nd generation) are equipped with Black Boxes (electronic control modules or computers). The nature of OBD2 lets a technician with a scanner tool hook up to the engine management system and look at a short history of various componenets. It used to be the last 30 sec. , I believe its a minute or so longer now. They can tell engine rpm's and brake application, wheel speed etc. because there are components in those locations that monitor performance and problems like engine spiking or missing or a wheel locking up on an anti-lock brake system. Turns out they've become useful in accident investigation also.

They have black boxes but not ones that record speed braking when you have an accident .They do record speed braking direction for the engine management system to operate correctly. This helps emmissions abs and other systems to work.Mick UK

any car that has anti-lock brakes and an air-bag system will record the speed the car was going when the air bag deployed
from the wheel sensors that tell the onboard computer for the anti-lock system if any wheel is loocked up so it can redistrubt
braking to a wheel that is still spinning. my 1990 caddy devill

Yes ... most modern cars built since 2000 have Black boxes, some have more than one. They monitor and control the engine, emissions, braking systems, transmission, etc.

They probably do. They have the airbag system, but I'm sure you know that.
I found this site- it looks like they do, but I did not poke around it too much.
