How much influence do individuals have over their health?

From my experience it seems that people can be motivated by their own age, a trip to the doctor or another family member or friends health problems. My brother in law was motivated recently to quit smoking and lose weight when he got engadged to my sister. I know for him he said that is was the realization that he was not getting any younger. His Dad died of a heart attack when he was young and he did not want to miss out on his family and life because of his own bad choices.

For your 2nd question I think that individuals have a lot of influence over their own health. Alot of health problems are more likely to occur if you live in a certain environment or your family had the issue but they can most of the time be avoided by taking care of yourself, eliminating stress, exercising and eating right.

In most cases that I've heard of, it's usually a near death situation that makes people do more good for their health. But, in some cases, it could be family members or genuine friends pushing the person to make changes. And a select few actually make changes when they notice bad things happening or when the doctor speaks with them.

Fear of what can go wrong. A sudden problem can shock one into action. For example, you have a transient ischemic (paralytic) attack, and start worrying about your blood pressure. An individual can change his lifestyle, improve eating habits, start exercising regularly, stop smoking, etc. to improve his health.

Age!
a lot of influence comes around when it comes to ruin our health, smoking, drinking, using drugs, not having enough sleep, it all comes from every angle, so called friends, television, radio, internet. Not until we grow old and with health problems thats when we try to stop and come to our senses. We should all thank god we have life and should take care of it. don't you think!! Letty =0)

What a wonderful question! When you get sick and tired and of being sick and tired! Most of us will find ways if we are awake and aware enough to realize that we lack optimum health. Peptides are small protein chains made in the brain based on our "thoughts", So it is not surprising to most of us health practitioners to find folks who seem to enjoy being sick! As awful as this sound, we get addicted to these Peptides just as we can become addicted to another substance entering the body from outside(Alcohol, drugs, foods), So
If I get angry for instance on a regular basis, the peptide for anger is being made daily in my brain and guess what I am not addicted to that chemical made in my own body simply because for whatever reason I cannot stop being angry! whaaaaaat????

Yes! Disease is not all about viruses and bacterial infections. So now you tell me my good one, how much influence does one have on his or her state of well being? Psychosomatics play a great role even in degenerative diseases such as cancer and heart problems. Joy and calmness for example make another good peptide (Serotonin) which enhances the body's immune system and regenerative abilities. You wanna be healthy, find ways to be kind, happy, serene, learn to meditate/pray, stay with foods that nature provided for you long before you arrived here.

For me it was this. The doctor said "change your lifestyle or else you may die in about two years". That did motivate me. I changed on that day. ( Note:..That was 6 years ago )
