I am an American woman looking to find my ancestry in Ireland. My family come from Mayo (Finn) and Donegal (Devine). How can I go about trying to look up my ancestors?

Hey Patricia,

Many places to look, here are a few. The UK lists have Ireland records also. The Irish sites are also a mix.

Genforum will give you people to talk to, with similar surname interests, Family Search will give you deceased searches, and the Ellis Island and other passenger sites will give you much information about who came over, from where, when and with whom where they were from, what the do.

Best of luck, keep going at it.

Besides trying what the others have suggested, you could look online for an Irish telephone book and call, or address book and write some people with names that are similar to your families names.

My family reverses the middle and first names in the next generation at times. If you have a father named Seamus Sean try looking for a Sean Seamus with your surname on the telephone or address information. You never know. You may just hit a relative who is wondering what happened to their family member who moved to America.

Good luck.
