Sign up for some proper training classes. This is the best way to learn how to control your dog. It's not just for the dog, but for you too. A good trainer is invaluable in having a happy pet.

Have you ever owned a dog before? You obviously didn't research the breed before you brought him home or you would know that German Shepherds are "natural protectors". It's perfectly natural for him to want to "protect" your children.

Dogs are "pack" animals and you and your family are his pack. You have to become the "alpha" of your pack or he is going to fill that position! You don't need to "yell" at him and you certainly shouldn't hit him with anything, even a newspaper.

He probably needs more exercise. You need to walk him and make sure he walks "at your side", not in front of you. Take him to obedience classes. If you are having trouble controlling him now, imagine the problems you will have when he is full grown.

In the right hands & with the proper training, German Shepherds can be the best companions you could ever hope for. They are intelligent, loving, and loyal, they are also "protective". Some day you may be happy that he was bred that way!

Don't worry so much, enjoy your puppy. Take him to obedience classes. Put in the time and work and you will be well rewarded! Congratulations on your new puppy (he won't be this much work forever)!

Newspaper???? I'd bite ya too!

First of all, the dog being protective of your son is his natural instinct.

Secondly, find a basic (beginning) obedience class near you (inquire at your vet's office or PetCo & PetSmart). These classes are available in some areas to pups as young as 12-16 wks.

this pup needs proper training. no offense, but you are doing alot of things wrong: do not hit the dog with anything. do not let anyone, especially a 4 year old, interact with the pup in rough play. this will make his behavior even worse (as you are currently experiencing). all dogs need training from a qualified professional trainer. if we deprive a dog of a solid training program, then we cannot expect them to act appropriately in our homes. a vast majority of the dogs given up to shelters, and eventually euthanized, are because of behavioral problems people mistakenly think cannot be fixed! do yourself and your family a favor- begin a training program AND get him neutered!! you won't regret it :)

(1) treat him as a pet but always know that he will be suspcious of strangers until they are introduced

(2) I notice you say that he grabbed your arm - but you do not say he bit. He was doing exactly what he was bred to do - protect. He didn't know you were playing. Now, just include him in the game of rough house and roll with the two of you. You start rolling around with the pup playing and have your son join in and then the 3 of you play.

Your mistake was in backing away - you should have grabbed him and said "Settle" - come here - its fine" and you and your son both pet him and get him in the game.

(3) Lose the newspaper. Aside from being ineffective generally, we are talking aboout a dog who was bred to stay in the fight to protect his charges even bleeding to death. That is less than a fly to him.

You need how to learn to train a dog using voice and hands and body language. Letting your voice go up when you tell him something is not going to get it -the Alpha dog rumbles or growls at lower ranked dogs to make them obey. Lower your voice and use an authoritative tone. AND GO OVER ANDMAKEHIM DO WHAT YOU WANT. Hedidn'tcomepre-programmedforcommands or behavior. Grab him by the collar and scruff and scold in that deep voice - if he is being really terrible, shove him down on his belly as you scold.

(4) Jumping (excerpt from the notes I give clients)

Stop jumping by any of these methods:

(1) A loud “No” and push her off and hold her down and scold her with “Bad, Bad Bad”. Then tell her “Okay,” let her up and give her a pat (if she doesn’t leap again.)

(2) A loud “No” and time it so that as she comes off the ground, you bring your foot forward and step on her back foot.

(3) A loud “No” and as she comes up off the ground, raise your knee so that she hits it with her chest and bounces off.

(5) Now you both need a GOOD obedience class - and that is NOT Petsmart or Petco.

GO here to find contacts in you area that can help you locate and obedience trainer who works with all breeds and who does AKC obedience competitions competing at what they claim to teach – no proof of ability like winning:

First of all, he is still waaay too much of a puppy to panic. You Can not let him back you up though. Don't yell, don't get the paper, just pay no mine to the pup, laugh or say it is OK and get nest to Jack to let the dog know you are not intimidated. Training him to be a companion is just a lot of love and he will return it.

Become the Alpha B*tch. Put him on his back and take his throat in your teeth. THEN teach him manners: Come, Sit, Stay, Heel. When he obeys correctly PRAISE! Forget the paper smacking garbage. When he does not obey totally IGNORE him, walk away....see how quickly he will follow you. Then give a command, "dog's name, come" " Good dog..."

You have to be dedicated. "NO" is invaluable. When giving commands, always use his name first, then the command.
