I have a picture of my wedding gown in my mind and I think it would be pretty simple to make (not for me, of course). If I buy the material I want and have it tailored would it be less expensive than buying a dress (probably not like the one I imagine)?

I think it would be worth the money to have it made to get exactly what you want. Plus, in the "time is money" mode, you won't waste time (and gas money) shopping around for something that may not make you happy.

There is a woman that's local here that does exquisite work & isn't expensive, either.

Wherever you are, make sure you see the tailor's work first. Ask around, make sure they're reputable. And in a non-smoking environment. You don't want your wedding dress smelling like an ashtray.

custom dresses are expensive and you should find a taylor you trust. they could botch your whole idea. i had a whole book of pictures of dresses i wanted, so i found discounted wedding gown stores and also shopped online. discount stores are cheap and you may just find exctly what you want. David's Bridal is where I got my dress. It was fairly inexpensive and all of my attendant that bought their gowns from there got a discount too. they hook you up. just don't use them for alterations....go elsewhere! they are a nightmare. good luck

No, it will be more expensive. I thought about this, and the cost was at least $500 for an informal dress with no decoration...no lace, appliques, beading, nothing. Just a sheath.
