When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin'."
I'm whispering "I was lost,
Now I'm found and forgiven."
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need Christ to be my guide.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
And need His strength to carry on.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
And need God to clean my mess.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
But, God believes I am worth it.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain.
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.
When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner
Who received God's good grace, somehow!

Maya Angelou is a remarkable woman. She has lived a difficult life and proved to be stronger than all the obstacles she encountered while living her life. Ms. Angelou is an open minded, articulate and intelligent woman. She is also a liberal, politically, and a proponent of gay rights. I respect and admire her tremendously no matter what her personal religious beliefs happen to be.

When I say 'I am Christian', I am lying...as I am not Christian...but believe strongly that we are all Christians, Jews, Muslims, Zorastrians, Hindus, Bhuddhist (and everything else) for we believe in doing good, being good and living good. We all belong to the same source and by calling ourselves anything we alienate ourselves from the others....That is not what religion is about....That is what politics is about...

I would not say it is quite the same. Handsome suggests someone who is appealing to many, whereas good looking is express how you personally are attracted. "Good looks are in the eye of the beholder" Handsome can also refer to positive qualities other than looks. "Handsome is as handsome does"

Sorry, the poem doesn't do much for me. It sounds like even though she says she's Christian, she is pretty much just playing lip-service to it. Sounds like a lot of Christians who don't give themselves credit for making it through life, but instead use their religion as a kind of crutch.

...I don't think she wrote it. You need to check several sources - not all agree she wrote this, and having heard some of her others poems, it is not consistent with these. Her stuff is more "new age".
