Why is it that some nails turn black? How to treat this discolouration?

Of course those fingers were sometimes involved in injuries where the nail had come off, after that the regrowth had been black. Also there are mysterious black lines that've appeared under/behind otherwise healthy nails.

Black spots and lines in your fingernails is a sign of melanoma cancer. You should go to your doctor immediately. Preferably a dermatologist.

Nails do not generally turn black. It could be a fungus or signs of something a lot worse. See your doctor. Do not accept "oh its OK". Get an answer.

Nails turning blue or black, may indicate heart disease. Consult your physician.

Nails turning black?? This isn't right unless you bruised or injured your finger. You need to show a doc this.
