HeyTimothy,

Ellis Island is free, passenger records abound at other sites also. Genforum you can talk to people with the same interests in surnames. LDS Family Search is a great source, here are a number of others.

After my initial response I discovered this site, went there, looked for someone, and up cam the record, no one charged me anything:

Family Search is free. They have the 1880 census America and England, that is free. Ancestry.com has some free areas. I subscribe to the census with Ancestry.com. It has been worth it for me. I knew my great grand fathers name and that was all I knew about him. I was able to trace him from England. He was born 1825. He sailed from Liverpool on the Ship Columbia on November 18, 1865. Landed at Castle Garden processing center on New years day 1866. Census showed his occupation as a Hatter. I found him in New York - Danbury Connecticut - then on to every place he lived when he settled in The Sate of Utah. I even found pictures on the Internet. I wish you luck. You just have to search and search and eventually you will hit the jack pot. Also look in Gen,web for your search area. Try typing in Free Genealogy. Also use the surname. Their are so many of your relatives that probably have genealogy web sites. Also message boards on genealogy sited. Genealogy has become America's favorite past time. It's so important that we know where our roots came from. I would like to share this poem with you. It gave me the inspiration to start searching.

“We are the chosen".

It is my feeling there is one who seems called to find ancestors.
To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of fact, but instead, breathing life into all who have gone before.

“We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one.
Its goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish.
How they contributed to what we are today.
It goes to respecting their hardship and losses,
their never giving in or giving up,
their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family.

It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a nation.
Its goes to deep and immense understanding that
they were doing it for us.
That we might be born who we are.
That we might remember them. So we do.

“Their love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence,
because we are them and they are us.
It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call
and take their place in the long line of family story tellers.”

I know the Mormon (LDS) church has the most extensive genealogy database in the world and it's all accessible for free. I'm not sure what they have available on the web though.
