Depending on what you want the dog for. If you're looking for a companion, friendly dog that is TERRIFIC with kids - go with a Golden Retriever or a Lab. They are WONDERFUL dogs and extremely smart, not to mention that they love water and great playmates in pools, lakes, etc. My Mom has a 9 year old Golden that is the highlight of our lives, acts like she doesn't know she's a dog. Even sleeps under the blankets with her head on a pillow. I have a Lab puppy and I tell ya, completely amazed with how smart she is already at 7 weeks old. I wouldn't have any other breed now aside from these two.

My favorite is the Pit Bull however this is not a dog for everyone. You have to be extremely responsible with this breed due to the reputation and because they are strong. Also if you are the type of person who is looking for power... you are not the type of person who needs to own this dog... people like this are a huge problem and only help generate the bad rap this breed has. The do not make good guard dogs because they are friendly even with strangers. You have to have a thorough understanding of them and how they work. Although the rewards of having one is outstanding. Best dog I have ever owned hands down.

The best breed of dog is what fits into your own lifestyle the best. If you like hunting and hiking through the woods, a Pekingnese certainly isn't the best breed of dog for you! If you like sitting around the house, not doing much of everything, a Lab puppy wouldn't suit you at all. And so on.

There are many, many sites that ask you specific questions about your lifestyle and can steer you towards breeds of dogs who will suit you the best. dogbreedinfo.com is one such site, but there are dozens more like it.

I have had two dogs in my life. A 90lb pitbull/shar pei mix named Charlie who is the most loveliest dog in the world. We got him from the pound. He is so kind and polite to strangers and strange dogs that it makes you wonder where the heck is the pitbull in him.
Then when I was young my family had a 150 lb Rottweiler. He was my hero growing up. His name was Titus. He was overprotective, he would nudge me alot, and he got into fights with other dogs all the time. He was a major pain in the *** sometimes and he would eat like a horse. But that dog saved my life when a stray dog ran over to me and bit me. It was pretty scary. Titus burst right through the screen window to whoop his ***. And he always loved me and slept in my bed when my parents weren't looking.
So In conclusion, the best breed of dog is what YOU need in life. For me its either a mutt from a pound who needs saving, or a massive Rottweiler who can be your Gladiator.

The best breed for me might not be the best breed for you.

If you are considering getting a dog, make sure it fits your lifestyle and family acttivity level. What size breed would fit into your home? Is your property adequate for the dog you are considering?

Personally I prefer Doberman Pinschers!

I'm partial to Border Collies... love the intelligence, quick ability to learn new things and that intense stare. But it's not a dog for everyone as they require lots of excercise and preferrably have a job to do. We're making Agility and Obedience the job for our BC puppy.

I like smart dogs - collies, border collies, shelties. They are so smart and learn quickly. They are also eager to please which is never bad. I have a border collie/ sheltie mix, and shes a genius. Mixes are great because you can get the best of many breeds and (most of the time) elimate some bad characteristics.

Over the past 25 years, we've had 2 German Shepards, a Rottweiller, and 2 Labs, (one yellow and one chocolate) by far the Labs are the best. Best Temperment, best behaved, easy to train, and just adores their owner.
