I want to start and atheist and agnostics club on campus but I've ran into some barriers. First of all I need 9 other people who want to join but I don't know how to ask someone? Being Atheist or Agnostic is not something someone advertises. Second of all, what would a club like this talk about or do. I've already decided that the club will do charity and that criticism of other religions will eb prohibited and that we would try and find more similarities rather than differences between religions. But what else? Anyone have any ideas?

I thinking for the club's purpose to promote religious tolerance as in don't criticize someone because their belief system or religious background is different. that religions have more things in common than differences.

I've changed my mind. I'm not calling it the Atheists and Agnostics club, I'm calling it the Religious Tolerance Club. Anyone can join. The point is to bring religions closer together instead of farther apart.

That sounds like a beautiful idea, I commend you. If I went to your college I would most definately join, because though I am a Buddhist I am also an agnostic.By leading through example you will give a good name to atheism and agnosticism. You should hold conferences to learn about other beliefs, to show that you are open to other ideas...

I would suggest regular internal discussions, on the subject of atheist morality and/or ethics. Attempt to write down a charter of the qualities that an atheist should aspire to "spiritually".
In addition, I would make its primary focus charity-based. Get out there raise money for a variety of causes, with the word atheist in plain view. You'll get a lot of people saying derogatory things to you and about you. But in that case, you'll be working wonders for atheism, as long as you show that you ARE the better person.
Let them fume and vent about your club all day long. It will force them to show their true colors, as you go out improving the community.
Also, if you got enough members together, you could probably get some decent speakers to visit your school. You never know, maybe a Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris might make an appearance... :)

Lots of college students are quite apathetic when it comes to religion. A lot of them in particular and a good portion of people in general ascribe to what I would call a "nominal theism," where they sort of believe in some higher power, but formally worship only on Easter and Christmas.
People that are determinedly Agnostic or Atheistic from my personal experience are quite hostile to religion. Look around at the Atheists posting here like the CPT for instance. He specifialy has terrible disdain for religion in general and Christians in particular.
I would theorize that your club, especially for people that are younger, will have many people appearing once out of curiosity, but that the only people who will stick with it will be rather hostile to people with other beliefs.
Sorry.

Read the book Forbidden archeology and The Hidden History of the Human Race. It shows Heaps of from scientists and archaeologists that Man was more intelligent millions of years ago and they didn't look like monkeys.
Krishna says in the Gita "Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear." also says The demoniac person thinks "I am the enjoyer. I am perfect, powerful and happy. I am the richest , There is none so powerful and happy as I am. I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give some charity, and thus I shall rejoice." In this way, such persons are deluded by ignorance." Go to www.stephen-knapp.com for universal truths

Perhaps you could have some discussions together about where your hope comes from. Hope is something every human being needs in order to survive, wo it would be an issue you would want to deal with.
As fo finding people for your club, all you have to do is put a poster on the wall asking people to call or email you.

Here's a link to a guy who actually did start a club for atheists and agnostics on campus. Why not get in touch with him and see how he got started and what issues he's faced?

Your ideas are very good to start with. You should ask the school to help support your club. With the purposes you mentioned, they should refuse to let you put posters around the campus...
By the way, I'm agnostic. Can I join? :)

I live in Texas too, and I've found that Christians are very devoted to Christianity, but they're still accepting of other religions. Now, trying to make one in Virginia would be hard.

Why not stick with a religion of good for all you probably would be able to find a lot of believers and you wouldn't have to be ashamed of your beliefs if you are true to the word and don't just preach it.
