Mark 4:26-29 "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come." What does the parable mean? What is Jesus intending to teach? This parable has always confused me.

This is talking about what God's kingdom is in general. "A man" could be a pastor or an evangelist, anyone who spreads the good news, which is scattering the seed. And though you may not always be the one to bring someone to the sinners prayer, you are still part of the process "though you don't know how". All by itself the person (which is the soil) starts producing grain (changes for the better in his life) first the stalk (which is the foundation, salvation) then the head which may respresent knowledge and understanding of the things of God. Finally he grows kernels which he can in turn plant into other soils himself! Now the parable takes another turn/meaning, in a grander scale. Now consider that the soil is not just one man but many and that the harvest that it is talking about is "the rapture", the end of the age. And as soon as the grain is ripe, the time is right, He (Jesus) takes a sickle to it to cut the good grain out from the bad. It is an awsome parable but basically it is talking about "the kindom of God" which is the church here on earth from inseption to the end when He comes back for us.

God is so cool. He gives us parables so that we can better understand Him. In the very first parable, Jesus explains that if we can understand this one, then we will be able to understand the rest of the parables. He likened the seed, to the Word of God. And the ground, to the heart of man. The Word of God is like a seed. Once it is planted, it grows. There are many stages of growth. God wants each one of us to bear fruit, Godly fruit. Fruit which comes from the Word of God. Then God harvests us. From the other parables, we learn that those who bare good fruit will inherit eternal life while those who don't will be cast into the fire. Only God's Holy Spirit can cause us to bare good fruit. From the first parable we learn that there are many different types of soil, people. What kind of soil do you have? If you do not have the right kind, to allow the seed to grow, then you can do something about it. You can weed and water it. You can soften it, by tilling it. You can remove the stones. The most important thing that you can do, is to receive the seed, God's seed. That seed is Christ Jesus, Himself. You can do this by accepting Him as your Lord and Savior. Then you water that seed by reading God's Word, the Bible. You can remove the weeds in your soil, by turning from the cares of this world. You can remove the rocks from your soil by remaining faithful to God through the hard times in your life. We can learn a lot about God by studying what Jesus said. I hope that this helps you understand so that you can be fruitful unto God and gain eternal life.

It re-establishes the fact that god is the creator and in control. The field and seed are God's kingdom, the farmer is the control of man and the harvest is in reference to the last days.

The seed is scattered (not planted) by the farmer, he does no work to maintain or care for the seed. The seed grows without the farmers influence. Without, or inspite of, the farmer's influence, the seed grows and becomes ripe and is harvested by god.

I believe this parable is about the spreading of Gods Word. Anyone who hears and accepts the Word of God will grow in the Lord and produce a crop of those they spread the Word of God to. When the time is right Christ will return and reap the harvest of souls - I believe the harvest refers to the Rapture, when all believers living and those who died in Christ will be taken to heaven.

All our efforts in our earth life to gain spirituality are the seeds. They fall on the ground and grow. We know not how...we merely sow. The reaping is done in heaven.

It means that when good seeds are sowed deep within, then no matter how negative things get you'll still sustain and grow in peace.

It means there is a period of time that is "planting", a period of time that is "growing", and a period of time for God to harvest. The time for harvest grows near.
