The best feeling in the world is not love - it is contentment. Contentment is the endavour to find the equilibrium in ones life - the balance point between risk and opportunity. Love, hate and other strong emotions are transitory in nature. They are there and are gone. They are intense and have a method of making us blind to things and people around us.
Contentment, on the other hand, is neither transitory nor intense. It is developed over time and with experience. Contentment also focuses on the long term, while the more intense emotions focus on the short term.
Contentment is also harder to achieve because it takes knowing ones self in very intimate ways and acknowledging who we really are - two characteristics that are undervalued by society. Therefore, in my estimation, contentment is the best feeling one can have in this world.

when living in Stalinist Russia - we had the KGB knock on our door at 2 in the morning, shouting 'Ivan Ivanovich - you must come with us now!'

The best feeling in the world was being able to say back to them - 'sorry but Ivan Ivanovich doesn't live here any more'

Seeing the look of delight on one of my children's faces when they learn something totally new and think is so neat that I have long taken for granted. That is a awesome feeling.

Love. Real, passionate, unconditional love. It is so hard to find, but is great when you do find it. It can also nearly kill you when it ends.
