Maybe its just a figure of speech to them

I don't. I traded the phrase "cheese and rice" for "Jesus Christ" a long time ago, and my usual oath is "Lord and Lady." Only on rare occassions, when I'm upset enough to not think rationally, do I swear by God, and that's only because I spent the formative years of my life as a Christian.

And as morgorond said, it isn't that I don't believe in God, I just choose not to worship Him.

Who says they do or is that just what you've told or what you assume? Most atheist I know are as solid in their lack of a belief in any god as the fundy christians are that they'll be burning in hell. So why would they ever ask for an imaginary creatures help?

Well, near death experiences give hallucinations so that could explain why some people do odd things. But real atheist's do not ask God anything in times of trouble because we can't ask imaginary beings to do something for us. We have to do it ourselves.

Um, I don't know any atheist at all who prays to any sort of deity, in trouble or not.

I had the occasion to be very near to death and the doctor didn't expect me to survive. I didn't pray. In fact, the only thought was, "Hm. Interesting. I can accept dying right now, I'd have no regrets."

I believe in many gods, so it just depends on which kind of trouble I'm in at the time. I may holler out for Odinn, or Thor or even Vali. And it's not that I don't 'believe in' the non-Nordic gods, I simply do not worship them.

people don't believe in god because they are strong enough to live there life without knowing someone is watching over them.

calling out oh god or god help us is a cultural thing and doesn't require a belief in god to say, when i stub my toe or something Ive been known to call oh sh*t should i worship that to?

Think you may be assuming that when someone says "god, help me" they are actually saying "God, help me". The word god is not always used in a religious context.

Him and Jesus come in handy as someone to curse when we hit our thumbs with a hammer. Maybe god protects christians from this accident common to atheists.

Non, je ne crois pas spécialement en Dieu. La religion ou la croyance ne fait pas partie intégrante de ma vie

They don't.
My father died early this year, as did a good friend of mine who was only 18. I was in a close-call car wreck and have struggled in school. Never once have I asked for help from any deity.
