Depend on the cruising speed. the more speed allow more than one car length. This is especially true for large trucks because if something goes wrong and you have to stop or quickly slow down they often cannot due to the mass of the load.

I go by the "both headlights in the rear view mirror" rule, and a peek to the side to make sure nobody else is slipping in from the other side. Turn signals are, of course, a must.

I also stop far enough back at stop lights/signs to see the bottoms of the rear tires in front of me, or with my front bumper behind the white line as appropriate. And I stop on yellow lights if it's safe to do so (not braking to hard).

The more we all follow the rules the safer we'll all be. Predictability helps prevent accidents.

My wife sometimes says I drive like an old man. I say I drive like a man who's going to be old.

At a minimum of one car length.

I try to pull back into the lane when I can see at least the license plate or, better, both headlights of the car I am passing in my mirrors. I think that gives me about 2 or 3 car lengths of safety.

I drive in DC traffic every day and if I waited for a whole car length before I passed someone, Crap I'd never get over!

At least a whole car length, especially if you are going more than 55 mph.

At least a car length--- I prefer two and more if I'm going faster.
