I washed my 04 Dodge Ram truck and the paint just peeled right off in the middle of the passenger door, I talked to Dodge directly as i am over my mileage. Got an estimate of the cost to fix it and the fact that it is an adhesion problem but they refuse to help me. This truck is almost 2 years old and this should not have occurred - I spent alot of $ on it and think they should make this right - any suggestions on how to get their attention without suing?

The only thing you can do is bend over and take it i'm sorry to say. Once the factory warranty is up, you're on your own. The only way to get it fixed for free is to find about 100 more people with the same problem and get a recall. My sister had the same problem on an 04 stratus. It's just junk paint. Sorry i couldn't be more help.

I would take the vehicle to the dealership service deprtment and have them look at it, even if it is out of warranty.
Show them the paint damage and ask them if there is a recall or any way to have to covered under warranty. Calling Dodge does no good because they can't see the damage. Also, sometimes vehicles sustain minor lot damage (door dings etc) if this was an area that was repainted it is not required to be disclosed to the customer. Dodge may not know it, the dealer would.

If that doesn't work,
you should call your insurance company and ask them if they have suggestions,
the body work was not the result of damage but they are there to protect you and your assettes and they would likely know how to get your vehicle fixed at little or no expense to you.

did you buy it used? What color is it? What it sounds like to me is that POSSIBLY it had been hit in that area and they did a pull and paint on it, so therefore it was a crappy job and now the paint is peeling off. There is no way that a factory fisish should do that. I have seen where silver paint will do that, but usually the paint totally goes to hell before it starts peeling. What I would do is go to www.carfax.com, pay 20 bucks, and run the VIN number through their system and see what comes up. this is not normal, and I would almost guaratee that it had body work done to it, once you get proof that it had been wrecked, and you were not told, then you have proof beyond reasonable doubt, tell the dealer that you have the information, and i am sure they will change their tune, if not then you will surely win the lawsuit should it come to that

did you use a pressure washer on it? just curious, if you did that would be your own fault. You have owned the truck for two years and never saw a problem until you washed it this time? was ther a chip in the paint where you hit it with the water and caused it to lift? There are a number of things that come into play, but you are out of warranty. So its your baby to deal with. Trying to sue them will do nothing but waste your time and your money with the same result as you have right now. Get the hood repainted, it doesnt cost that much if you like your vehicle.

Do you kno if any chemicals were spilled on it? There are numerous chemicals that will cause that to happen. for example brake fluid will do it and it will look fine and all and it will dry, but then when you get it wet it will just peel off like you described.this also tends to happen around constructions sites, though im not sure as to what chemicals they use that cause this. But anyway the dealership and/or car manufacturer in no way assumes responsibility for this, it would be hard even under warranty to get them to do anything about it without a specific paint related recall for your vehicle. I doubt that its a batch of crappy primer or paint as the whole truck would be peeling and not just one portion of the truck. you should be able to take it to a reputable paint shop and they should eb able to paint just the door and match it for around $1000. Though you should look at cars theyve done in the past to see the quality of their work. Never ever cheap out on a paint job you truly get what you pay for in terms of auto paint and the quality of work. You should address this soon as water and other liquids can easily get behind the rest of the pain and cause it to peel and/or cause your door to rust.

I would deal with the company, issue a complaint. Tell them that you bought a truck from them and where a loyal customer, but I think I may be buying from a different company in the future. If that dosen't work video tape the peeling paint, and go on one of the customer adviocate web sites.

Acually it's junk primer. This happens when an auto company gets dealt some crappy primer and it happens to most auto manufacturers at some point in time.

take it to a bodyshop and get them to call the dealership or whoever and they may be more inclined to help you if they think you are actually going to fix it. They may think your just trying to get a check to stick in your pocket. hope this helps.
