All Soul's day is a day of intercession for the departed. Prayers are offered up for people who have died and were not clensed of sin -- those in purgatory. Mainly the day is spent in prayer and in some places, black is worn. Historically, the feast day carried certain pagan overtones and meals were prepared and left on the table for departed family members as it was believed that dead came back to their houses on this day. Other cultures have held vigils at cemataries and poured holy water or milk as a libation offering over the tombstones. Similar and probably the basis for the Mexican Day of the Dead festivities.
