Now i have heard it is best to defrost meat in the fridge instead of counter. But it seems to take like two days to do this. Is it ok to defrost on a plate on your counter top?

No. It is not. Bacteria grows on it. Defrost under running water or the microwave if you can't defrost in the refrigerator.

Only if your home, you never want meat to reach room temp for more than one hour. to defrost meat fast, place in cool to luke warm water. Also with large food items that are hot never place in fridge until cool, rapidly cool it by placing in ice water.
Those that defrost in a microwave are bad cooks end of point!
If your always short on time a 'jet-stream' or convection oven can cook frozen foods.
Suzie is the smart one.
OK people wake up and stop wasting water (Lil miss food handler) running water does no more to defrost than filling a pan or your sink!

Freezing and thawing ground beef can be tricky! But I have the solution. When the ground beef is fresh and ready to be placed in the freezer here is what you should do ---> If the meat is on flat styro tray with clear plastic over the top Push down in the middle of the big lump of meat. Make it skinny in the middle. Why? because the meat stays frozen longer in the middle if its a big lump. ! If you make it thin in the middle it will thaw out more evenly and more quickly! *For tonights tacos you should thaw the meat by taking a big pot and fill it 2 inches deep with water. Bring the water to a rapid boil and put the meat in there. Put the lid on tight and turn it down to medium heat. Stir periodically it until it is completely thawed then pour off the water and the fat and add your taco spices and cook your taco meat!! Yum!

Not in the summer.Bacteria grows too quickly. I have defrosted beef and chicken on countertop for years. But not Fish. You can also place frozen meat in bowl of cold water or defrost in micro but on 30% approx. 3 min per lb.

defrost meat on a plate what I do. take it out in the morning and run water on it and I garauntee it will thaw out by the time you go to prepare it for dinnner. BUT make sure you check it during the day because depending on the temperature it could thaw out quicker than expected and if this happens just chuck it in the fridge and bobs your uncle.

Meat should be thawed in the refrigerator.

I usually stick it on the counter and take my chances and I haven't died or killed anyone yet. You can also defrost in the microwave if you're in a hurry.

I have to confess that we do this all the time . Actually we keep in the (turned off) microwave so the cats can't get at it. If I take something out of thee freezer in the morning when I wake up it's thaawed by the time we get home from work.

Probably no one will officially tell you that this is OK but I've been doing it for 25 years.
