I've got a dog with such sensitive skin and allergies, he's even unable to use the DVM "Relief" shampoo sold at the vet. I found out the new shampoo I ordered online (Allermyl?) is backordered, and I have to clean him soon! Would Johnson's No Tears baby shampoo work, or anything else?

I have a dog with very sensitive skin who is also unable to use Relief by DVM. I have found that KetoChlor by Virbac is the only thing she can use. This is essentially the same as DVMs Chlorohexidine, which she can also use.

the good type of shampoo is AVEENO they have different types of soap that you can use for the sensitive skin. i use this on my dogs all the time and it helps the dry skin and keeps it from drying out. it will soothe the sensitive part and make it feel better. you can use the baby shampoo too it will work also. the aveeno is alittle pricy so you can use the baby shampoo on him. it will work good too. you just want to be careful with any shampoo that you get because it can be to harsh on the skin and make it worse even though it may say that it helps soothe the skin. sometimes that type of shampoo will make the problem even worse and then you will have a biggert problem to deal with. i would just use the baby shampoo or the aveeno, because you are less likely to have the problem reaccure. good luck

Don't use human shampoos on dogs, the pH balance is different in each type of shampoo and it can cause further skin irritation.

See if any specialty dog stores in the area carry soapless shampoo in the meantime specially made for dogs with skin irritation.

Baby shampoo works fine just use as little shampoo as you can and be sure to rinse really well. Do not use hot water only luke warm. Do not bathe to often only as you really need to.
Dogs with sensitive skin can get irrated from to much bathing sometimes.
I had a Doberman who broke out in a rash and we had to be very careful of shapmoo on him.
Lots of rinsing to be sure we got it all off.

I wouldn't use people shampoo on a dog because it dries out their skin which makes them itch like crazy. They have pet wipes at most pet stores which would clean him a bit before you get that shampoo. I would ask my vet about using anything if his skin is that sensitive though.

One of my dogs has eczema and the other has sensitive skin so I use oatmeal shampoo for dogs, any brand. One very important thing I've found is to make sure you get all of the soap rinsed off....if any dries in their fur or on their skin that can make them itchy too. BOL

I really think that the baby shampoo will exacerbate the problem. Have you asked your vet for some Dermasol shampoo or have you tried to give him benedryl to calm his allergy? Have you tried changing his food to reduce the allergy?

You can get pure castile soap at the drug store, over by the Nutrogena stuff..It is really hypoallergenic..It is what our hospital used for newborn babies, as there were a few reactions to baby shampoo..

I use regular Dawn on my dog. Not the concentrated stuff, but the original version. I was using oatmeal shampoo on her but it made her have a red rash on her stomach. I have read that it is gentle and kills fleas.
