I have had my puppy for about a month and half and he goes in his litter box when I put him in it and sometimes on his own, but then sometimes he decides he doesn't have to and he knows he is naughty when he doesn't. Sometimes he will just go right outside of his box. I just want to know how much longer it will be till he gets it. I work with him consistently.

Just to clarify some things: I don't mind walking my dog or playing with I love him very much and give him all the exercise he needs, I just feel that when I am not around he should have somewhere to go potty instead of suffering at home. Secondly if it is safe for a cat to use a litter box why not a dog? So I would prefer people answer my question who have a positive reply instead of one that is no use to me at all.

I trained my dog to use the litter box. It took about 3 months. When you catch him using the litter box...reward him. When he goes outside of it....ignore him. Clean it up, and avoid him for a few minutes. Dogs love attention. It's what they live for. If you deny him the attention for bad behavior and reward him for good behavior, he will catch on.

I know people that have tried the litter box training and at the end, it doesn’t seem to work well with the dog. Dogs not only use the bathroom to relieve themselves but to mark territory and to fend off others that might be inclined to invade the area. So it's a communication between them and others (not necessarily dogs).
If your dog is a small breed, you might get it to work depending on how frequent you work at it. Might. If he will ultimately become a medium to large dog, I do not recommend it. I am no professional but I can say from experience that it does not work as people want it to work. Again it all depends on the breed but when he gets old enough to take walks do not assume the litter box is an excuse for him to not get his daily dose of exercise.
People use toilets, cats use litter boxes and dogs go out in the ‘wild’ or designated area. Usually the dog will find that ‘special’ spot on his own and right now you have chosen his spot. Not to sound harsh on you but to give you a dogs perspective.
But at any rate, I do not suggest him using the litter box inside because you are installing this train of thought that it is okay for him to potty inside as well as to potty in the box. It can confuse him later on when he might need a babysitter for a few days or is attending a doggie daycare. And should there be no litter box, what will he do then? He is still young and this is not a challenge that can be handled in only a few weeks time, it will take months and perhaps reassurance. Also, positive re-enforcement. No matter what you train him with remember to reward him for good behavior (or a successful potty trip).
Don't discipline him too harshly for not making it to the box. He is still a puppy and everyone at such an age has had their slips, even us.

I do not believe a dog should be litter box trained, it is not a cat...They should be trained to go outside, therefore it is going to take some time and dedication, if you start training the dog to go inside a litter box inside the house even as a puppy then it will think it is okay to go inside the house and if you think about it, you are training the dog to go somewhere that you will not want it to be going as an adult..sending mixed messages to the dog...Try the website "westwoodanimalhospital.com" I am sure you can find some helpful information on proper potty training...Good Luck!

Our dog is litter trained and it took him maybe 6 months. Sounds like yours is doing well already. Our dog will sometimes still go right in front of it, but that's when the litter in the box is used and it's like he doesn't want to step on it - can't say I blame him.

Dogs should be trained to go outside. I did have a neighbor that paper trained her dog, it went on a square of newspaper when she wasn't home to take it out.
I have a six month old pup, we get her when she was about 8 wks. It took me about 6 to 8 weeks to completely house break her. We use a crate/kennel in the house. This is the way to go if you are house breaking a puppy.
There are lots web sites that tell you about crate training. Here is one:

Depends on the dog but most dogs arent litter box trained...cats are. You can house break dogs but that is about it.
