The acidity in ketchup--tomatoes and vinegar-- will make it go rancid after awhile if not refrigerated.

Yes, if it's something like a leftover burger in the fridge.
Ketchup needs to be refrigerated after opening, therefore the fridge. Plus there's the whole combo about cold and hot together when eating. Hot french fries and cold ketchup and sour cream is the best combo.

Ice cream tastes better on hot stuff, like a brownie and ITS still refrigerated. The ketchup is in the fridge because the tomatos are perishable and the flavor stays fresh longer.

It's very popular to have eggs and ketchup, so the way I figure it:
1. You make yourself a nice big plate of eggs, any kind.
2. You plate 'em up, and sit down to eat them.
3. You suddenly realize you've forgotten your ketchup.
4. You get up to go grab it from the fridge.
5. And when you return, your fickle eggs have gone cold, and you're too lazy to heat them up.

Yes on my baloney sandwiches, and when working in the restaurant business, it does not go rancid so much as it can ferment, as the sugar content, for you americans it is corn syrup like coke, here in canada we use real sugar in both, but the hot and cold changes can set the sugars and the acids plus the starches naturally occuring in the product to last longer if chilled, but if you consume a lot it does not matter, if your worried buy a smaller bottle, or see if you can lift a few packets from your favorite fast food restaurant, they last for years??

You keep it in the fridge so it doesn't go rancid.
