Many alcoholic beverages contain sugar. Beer, for instance contains carbs - so the effect it will have on your weight is no different than consuming white flour bread or pasta. It's easy to consume a few glasses of alcohol without even noticing the amount - and before you know it, you ingested 350 calories (or more) just from a one beer and a pina colada. Also, those drinks which have milk in them, syrup, etc, obviously have an even greater caloric content. And, since it takes much less time for liquid to get into your bloodstream and be absorbed by your body, as opposed to when you're eating food, the faster all that sugary/carb infested alcohol gets stored in your body as fat - not to mention many alcoholic beverages make a person bloated, hence the term "beer belly."

Actually there are no studies that prove this.
Acohol consumed is similar to any other food, except that it provides calories but no other nutrients (like vitamins, minerals, proteins, etc). This is called empty calories. Eating white sugar by itself also gives you empty calories.
Alcohol is broken down much faster by the body than other food types and is stored as fat faster. This is one of the reason that people say that alcohol makes you fat.
There are other effects which are not nutitional
Most alcoholic beverages contain carbs - a pint of beer usually contains 130-150 calories. Also the inebriation causes you to eat more food

Because, alcohol affects your brain. ;-)
You loose all sense of eating and keep on gulpping stuff in.
So your appetite goes up abruptly. and u keep on eating and eating. I experienced this a number of times.
