I'd like to say some people are just born leaders, but environment can't be denied. You wonder why there are so many children of politicians/leaders who become leaders also. Or why children of successful people, e.g. doctors, lawyers, etc., are also successful. I believe people should be taught, or need to learn, the importance of education, of service, of law. It's not necessarily the subject they learn, but the process of learning. If you learn the skills of learning, or the skills and importance of service, you will generally seek greater/more learning and will seek to make a different in your community.

Listen to the people you are leading, if they know of good things then incorporate these into whatever you are doing. If their ideas lack something brainstorm with the group to try and figure out how they should be changed so that they will work. Explain that just doing what you want will work if they get on board but if they are part of the initiative then they will work harder to make it work or ask for help so that they succeed. The group is always stronger when they pull together. Try pushing a car out of the snow bank with 6 people helping it is easy, with only two doing it and the others watching it becomes much harder. Allow your developing leaders to have some practise in leading using instructional word play to do a particular task. The leader writes down on paper what needs to be done to complete a task then reads it back to the group who do what he or she says, if an obstacle appears that was not part of the prethoughtout routine then adaptation must occur. How many adapts were required and did the group finally complete the task. EX. Go into a box of stuff and find a wed-git and put in somewhere in the room that is down the hall in another room. Have fun with this one, let your imagination go and come up with some humorous situations as well.

Be a good example so that you inspire others to want to be good people. If others respect the work that you do, you will be on your way in developing a great work environment.
I have worked for some awesome leaders. Both had a terrific sense of humour, showed their vulnerabilities, accepted mistakes, and most importantly, brought out the best in me by recognizing my strengths and letting me be me.
I also have had poor leaders. They were poor leaders because they didn't put in the effort to build the team, took bad shortcuts in their work and then shuffled the brunt of the work onto the employees, and patronized those who tried to do a good job.
You have to be honest about your intentions. There will be people who disagree with this but my feeling is that if I know your intentions as being honorable, I'll do my best to follow you and make you stand out as a leader.
Good luck.

If you are a good leader then others will follow your example. One thing a good leader does is lets others have their turn. If you are the supervisor or the person in charge, let those subordinate to you have some responsibility. Share the load. Other things that make a good leader, trust, honesty, humility, education, experience. Be ready to do what you ask of others to do. By being a good leader you will inspire others to emulate you. As well you should. It's a good compliment to both you and those around you.

You lead with understanding and wisdom as a result to move the people you are leading ahead to the right part and not astray. You also lead by reading books of wisdom. When reading you have to forgone every other thing and focus. You breed people by example. If you had a bad attitude when leading i.e by not showing the people under you good example, they'll definitely follow up your foot-steps. So you breed people by example. For refference: Joshua inthe bible lead the people of Isrealite into th promise land.

I believe that in order to lead, we must first learn how to serve. In my personal experience When I've had to lead, my choice has been to lead by example. The worst job would first be done by me in front of everyone, then I had no problem asking others to do it later. The hardest tasks I would do first, then once again I could ask others to do them. Anyone can use fear, bullying, peer pressure etc, but a true leader in my eyes is at the front getting dirty just like anyone else!

This really is a person specific question because good leaders are as different as the circumstances and their personalities. I have only one point in common that I can suggest that all good leaders possess: they love themselves in an emotionally authentic way and therefore can serve others (leadership) with compassionate responsibility.

The Two Most Important Keys to Effective Leadership
Trust and confidence in top leadership was the single most reliable predictor of employee satisfaction in an organization.
Effective communication by leadership in three critical areas was the key to winning organizational trust and confidence:
-Helping employees understand the company's overall business strategy.
-Helping employees understand how they contribute to achieving key business objectives.
-Sharing information with employees on both how the company is doing and how an employee's own division is doing - relative to strategic business objectives.
So in a nutshell -- you must be trustworthy and you have to be able to communicate a vision of where the organization needs to go.

Good leaders know how to turn over everything they do to those who work for them and then in turn spend their time, instead of doing tasks, developing those who work for them. This is applicable to outside the office as well. When leaders are not bogged down with the mundane, they are free communicate the big picture and then coach those around them to the desired result.

Lead by being out front. People are like cattle they follow the lead person (my not be the highest ranking either). Encourage others to take the lead from time to time.
