You can't train an insect to specifically target a particular crop - locusts by their very nature are omnivorous and will literally eat ANYTHING.

Sadly, the profit levels from growing food in, for example, Afghanistan (producer of over 80% of the world's opium) will never be able to match the money to be made growing poppies.

During the reign of the Taliban, there was a widespread crackdown on poppy growing but, once the West got involved and deposed that regime, poppy production skyrocketed and is still multiplying year-on-year. Draw what conclusions from that you will.

I make no apologies for the Taliban regime - they needed to go - but this was (the only?) one of their ideas that made sense to me.

Sadly, as long as there is a demand for any illegal narcotic, and money to be made from the supply thereof, there will always be someone willing to meet this demand.

It s a great idea, but unfortunately locusts have no nerve endings ie they can live without a head! So Id imagine training them to do anything would be extremely difficult. If we removed one thing like opiates they would just discover something else to get high on anyway! I know how heart breaking it is to watch a family member or someone you love go thrrough this, I hope he manages to beat his addiction.

I can see where you're coming from and it does seem a good idea. ---Just wondering though --- what would a locust do if it got 'high' from the poppy seeds?

Yes but not easy to do. I tried to train some slugs to eat weeds instead of flowers, but they were too stupid to understand what was expected of them
