I'm assuming you mean understory growth, like bushes, shrubs, flowers, etc.? There is always SOME ambient light under the trees that allows them to get sunlight, even if it is diffuse. This is filtered light, reflected light, etc. Walk in the woods -- it is NOT dark in there! Hope this helps!

i know what you mean! how do the leaves bio-degrade? well if the leaves are on the floor then it must be autumn(fall) meaning there will be no leaves on the tree above it, so all the sunlight will get through the branches. in places like the tropics, where there is no such season, the types of trees in the tropics all have periods of shedding their leaves and growing back immediately, therefore the decomposition of the leaves will be a lot quicker as the temp. is a lot hotter.

The little plants get some as the wind blows. But in a very dense forrest, there are no plants on the ground.
