The bodies of Christians are separated from their spirits in what is called physical death. The body then decomposes. At the resurrection, the spirit will be united with a "glorified" body, which will never decay but regenerate forever.

All death is a separation. The second death is a permanent separation of God's Spirit from the fallen human spirit.
