The ability to sell cars....also don't take women who come into the showroom as being car idiots, after all with so many career women out there a lot are making their own car purchases. Several salesman lost a sale from me for treating me like a complete bimbo....I let them know!!!! be helpful without being in your face, your first conversation with the customer is the ice breaker...try and find out what they need, it may not be what they want, what car in the showroom best fits their pocket....also it is human nature, people may aim high and above their budget. Each showroom will have it's policy on finance. Set a price so that you can drop it and still bring it within a profit. Be courteous without being Mr Smarm.

think of it as being a lawyer....do whatever u can to persuade the other side to grab them in... try finding that "good" thing abotu the car. it has to be a feature of the car that is very "unique" and different from the average joe car. It may be the MPG, or it may be the Bluetooth hands-free device....whichever that feature may be, makesure u mention and show its operation to the client. Especially dont forget to give YOUR business card, not the general car dealership card. Car salesman usually get paid by commission, u want to makesure that YOU really stand out, you are fighting against other blood-thirsty car-salesman also...keep that in mind. You have to be a fighter.

It's not selling cars, it's selling yourself, and make sure you learn the 12 steps. The first four are the MOST important.
1. Meet and Greet-hand shake- don't let there hand go til you get their whole name first and last.
2.Fact find- find out what kind of car fits their needs, not what they want. How many kids, what they do for living, what purpose the vehicle will be used for. car truck suv or van.
3.Walk the Inventory- Show them what you have on your lot-DO NOT let them walk around free, keep in control of them let them follow you, that way when it get close to the closing, YOU are in control.
4. Demo- get them in the car and take have them drive you around, this is where you find out about them while you make them love the vehicle. Pre qualify them, there credit, their work history, w/o them knowing while making them fall in love with the car, this way when you get back to the lot you will know if they are primary or secondary customer or if the car is too expesive and you need to look at a less expensive vehicle.

Make sure you have a good sales manager. Otherwise car lots eat new people up.

if you want to know what makes a good car salesman because you want to be helpful and carry out your job in the most honest way, you need to wiat for someone to approach you not pester them as soon as they walk through the door. Ask what questions they have then give them the info, dont fire information at them that they may not want to know. Dont be pushy take things slow and let the customer make their own decisions.

If you want to know what makes a good salesman in a car salesmans managers eye. PUSH PUSH PUSH PUSH PUSH, Dont let the customer go out the door without signing. LIE LIE LIE and LIE some more. Make them believe they are getting a better deal that than are, pretend to throw in a free tank of petrol.

Scotts answer is a good one, my Dad stopped by a Jaguar garage in his overalls, and the car sales person told him there was no way he could afford to buy a new Jaguar.....he return a few days later with a very expensive fuel injection Triumph (they don't make them any more) the car sales person was gutted!
Little did he realise my Dad owned his own business and was just covering for a sick driver!!!

Don't be pushy, find out what they want from a car, family, sporting activities ect and genuinely try to match their needs to the car that will suit them, they will return or recommend you to friends. After sales service also needs to be good.

You've gotta have the gift of the gab and be very quick thinking. You need wit, charm, confidence, intellect and you have to be able to work under pressure and meet targets.
You also need to be highly competative as you will be competing against the other salesmen.

Good luck in your new job but remember that only the best of the best make it in that game. Don't be disheartened if it dosn't work out as 95% of the population couldn't do the job of a car salesman.

Good luck :-)

There is a very good book called "You Can and Should Sell Cars" by Jack Bennett.

The ISBN number is 0-37816-79-5

I bought my copy at Borders when I was working in the US.

I hope this helps.....

if i will be the car buyer i will look at you first because "first impression last".
1. the way you look, dressed and speak.
2. maintain eye contact with your client
3. give the full details of the car you are selling.
4. and most of all don`t take too much commission
(it won`t hurt if you will earn less than you expected.)
5. BE TOLERABLE
