An undershirt with a sweater or a sweatshirt or a hoody is good if the school isn't too warm. A nice thick coat with hat, mittens or gloves and a scarf on really cold days...(buy those now they will be sold out soon!) Jeans or sweat pants. Have at least one set of LongJohns and one pair of snowpants for playing outside in the snow. You'll need extra gloves or mittens for playing...they get wet fast! A good pair of waterproof lined boots are a must as well. Its great for the kids to get out and play in the snow...just watch the time and their fingers/toes/nose...they get too cold just bring them in...I usually don't let mine play outside if it gets below 15 degrees or so. Have fun...hope you get a white Christmas..there's nothing prettier!!

3-4 layers keeps you the warmest and also allows the child to shed a layer if too warm in school. The 30's is not really that cold though. A long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt and a jacket would be fine. Go for the 3-4 layers if it's in the 20's and under. That includes an undershirt, a long sleeved shirt, a sweatshirt or sweater and a coat.
Don't forget gloves and a hat either. Send a comb or brush along so they can fix the hathead look LOL

Don't panic. Use what you see other parents around you doing as a starting place. Remember that you know your child the best and how they will respond to the weather is different than another's.
That being said, a long sleeved shirt under a second shirt, jeans, warm socks, a good winter coat (check locally for a good one, they sell what is appropriate for your region), hat and gloves. Remember to take into consideration wind-chill. If it is windy you may want to make sure that your child keeps their face protected from wind burn. It can be very painful.
You'll adjust quickly to your new location and next year you will be giving someone else advice.

We live in a place that is around 0-30 degrees like 6 months out of the year. For school I dress mine in jeans and a long sleeve shirt, not a sweat shirt, just because the school it self is usually kept warm and a sweater might be too hot. On extra cold days I do put a sweater on them though. Then just make sure they have a heavy jacket to wear outside. They sell thick leggings for girls that will keep their legs warm if you want them to wear a skirt or dress.

I used to live in Wisconsin and when the weather gets to 20 degrees its important to always have gloves that is a must. A big coat, and long sleeve shirt or sweater, a beanie is also a good idea so it will keep there ears warm. I now live in California so I don't need to dress like this at all anymore.

We live in Ohio where if you wait 10minutes the weather will change!! Our rule is simple. Our 10yr old son must wear a winter coat if the temp is below 40^F. A denim jacket is permitted between 40^-60^F. You may also want to consider dressing in layers so that if it warms up between the time they leave for school in the a.m & the time they get out of school they won't be melting in their coat on the way home

I grew up in Montana, and im not lying, i walked a little over a mile to school in -30f weather. like another poster said layers is the best. in your climate the school ought to have a coat room in the classroom. a t-shirt under a long sleve shirt, long johns, jeans that fit over the long johns, a good pair of boots, with tennis shoes in the backpack. a good parka with a zip out liner, mittens are warmer than gloves, and a stocking cap under the hood. just remember that 20-30 isn't really that cold, and by feb the kids and you will be used to it!

Two layers and a winter coat should do it. One layer like an undershirt.
One layer long sleeve, button up or tee shirt. Long pants...jeans. Winter
coat with hood. Scarf, hat and mittens are good for colder weather. Snow
pants for playing in the snow. Winter boots for snow too.

Not being funny or anything, but how would you dress if it was 20 to 30 degrees outside. I hope you would dress in shorts and a t shirt. Use some common sense!
