Didn't these people learn in driver's ed. that you're supposed to look over your shoulder and check the blind spots? I've had several close calls because of these people.

I always check both the mirror and with a head check (my father and grandfather have both been truck drivers in the past, and so with their commercial licenses and good driving records they gave me lots of advice). However, my driver's ed instructor actually berated me for this habit. He said it was dangerous to take your eyes off the road in front of you for even the brief second of time required to do a head check. Which is totally ludicrous, since if you stared straight out the windshield the whole time you were driving you'd never be able to read the speedometer or check any of the gages. Needless to say, as soon as I was out of his class, I completely ditched his driving advice. And as a further note, he was later fired from another school after he drove his vehicle into one of the school's buildings. Safe driving techniques, anyone? Unfortunately, I believe many driver's ed instructors may be advising against the head check, too, though, which I think is a sham. However, if you take an accredited motorcycle safety course, they'll definitely recommend the headcheck regardless of the type of vehicle you're controlling at the time. =)

It's people like 'Joe U' who are nearly killing you, I see.
There ARE blind spots, two of them, and you need to turn your head when you change lanes. I think having to re-take your drivers test amd exam should be mandated every 5 years. Come on, you take a test when you're 16 and you're ok until 80??

I'm sorry, but I was taught that we shouldn't look over our shoulder, because it could cause us to swerve or hit someone/ something in front of us. But, I look over my shoulder anyway, and in all my mirrors. I like to be extra safe.

I guess they don't want to look behind them to avoid running into the back of someone up front. I had an accident like that before so I usually use my mirrors.

A lot of people are unsure of themselves, I think. And yes, they are dangerous only using their mirrors...but just think if they actually turned around and looked...maybe causing themselves to swerve and then over correct because they are afraid and uncomfortable...it's a never ending circle of madness.

I think people have gotten lazy and overall they are just more aggressive. My ex used to say, they have brakes, they can use them.

Maybe when they are in an accident they will learn, but until then we must all learn to be defensive drivers.

If you had been paying attention in driver's ed, you would know that the mirrors are to be adjusted so that you can see directly behind your vehicle and down each adjacent lane.
Properly adjusted mirrors allow a driver to make lane changes without turning around and taking his eyes from the road ahead.

Please stop driving until you learn how.

Addendum: TwoWords, please please please, adjust your outside mirrors to ELIMINATE THE BLIND SPOTS!
