The bore and stroke will make it a 428. Check the number on the heads and go to "428cobrajet.com" you may still have a 428 , just not a cj or scj motor . Unfortunatly a lot of 390's are sold to people as 428's On ford parts the first letter is the decade (c = 60's , D = 70's E = 80's and so on down the alphabet ) the second numder is the year . A part number C8AE - 6090 would be a 1968 part . cj and scj parts should start with C8** , C9** , or D0** , if its a D1**,D2**,D3**,D4**,D5**, or D6** its a 360/390 truck motor , since they only made those in 1971 to 1976 , this is if its even an "FE" big block.

if it really is a 428 cobra there should be a small plate near the block number. If you know what year the motor is, you can research the block number, and by knowing it is a ford you can elimintate it down. But if you bought it from a reliable source you may just want to ask them.

Get some numbers or symbols off of the heads. They will tell you what size the heads are. I might be wrong but didn't the 428 come with dual 4 barrell carbs? The valve covers also were unique to that engine. Just a few things to check out... go to www.fordforums.com and ask there. They would know...
