The value of anything, especially in New York, is entirely unrelated to the actual underlying cost. Value is, however, directly related to how much one pays for it. Thus, the more expensive something is, the fewer the number of people who can afford it, making it more exclusive, and thus more valuable to a great many people. Plus, in the case of Masa you're paying for all kinds of intangibles such as the atmosphere, the service, the location (the rent is ridiculous), the quality, and so on.

Is the food itself worth $500 a person? No, absolutely not. But being able to drop $500 a person on dinner puts one in exclusive and rarified company. It's therefore worth $500 a person because of what it says about you.

It is so expensive because you are getting the highest quality sushi, flown in daily from Japan and served to you by an amazing sushi chef.

Besides that, you get the total experience of sitting at a sushi bar that is sanded daily, in a beautiful restaurant, in one of the greatest cities in the world.

For some people, that is worth $500. If you just want to eat some sushi and don't care about any of that, then there are plenty of places you can eat for less!

It is beacuse the sushi you eat here is flown in daily from Japan. Therefore, it is an incredible amount of money to pay. I have not eaten here, but I have eaten at Per Se, which is located as well in the Time Warner Center. Per Se was quite expensive as well, but well worth it! Not sushi, but wonderfully prepared French American cuisine.

I am not a huge fan of sushi, so I don't think I will be dining at Masa. The sushi is also supposed to be made from exotic fishes. This makes it sound appealing, but I still think I will stick with Per Se.

Bon Appetit!

There's a tremendous amount of expense account money in New York City. Much of it flows out of Wall Street but you also have the publishing and fashion businesses headquartered there among many others.

If you can make a million dollar sale for a thousand dollar meal, it's a bargain. However, anyone who would waste this kind of money on a spouse or girlfriend needs to seek counseling from a mental health professional.

Because people are willing to pay what they charge. It's economics; supply and demand, and demand is high!
