I suggest walking, drinking alot of fluids, and massaging the legs it helps the most, it gets the circulation going. My father has the same problem, massaging the area helps him the most. Hope you feel better soon!

I have this problem too. My legs swell mostly when I'm at work. I stand a lot. I wear support hose better known as T.E.D. Hose. They don't eliminate 100% of the fluid, but most of it. Another good thing to do is, elevate your feet when sitting or laying down. Prop them with pillows. That will encourage the fluid to flow back up to your heart and out your kidneys.
Make sure that your blood pressure is under control. Hypertention can cause your heart to beat fast. Fast heart beats cause your heart not to be able to pump with full contractions. Without full contractions, not all the fluid moves to where it should...out to the kidneys.
Cut down your intake of sodium. Get some exercise (ask your MD what is best for you) and watch your fluid intake (don't over hydrate). Make sure your eating balanced meals. Be sure not to take in too many calories. Too many fats and sugar can cause arteosclerosis complicating circulation.
Sometimes medication can help, but that is something you need to discuss with your doctor.
Best wishes.

Edema is caused by many underlying factors, the most common being caused by too much salt. Perhaps a low salt diet will reduce the swelling. The stockings act as peristaltic muscles, pushing the fluid in the interstitial spaces of your legs back into your circulatory system. In any case, consult a physician as edema can be fatal if not treated.

Also, and this is from alternative medicine. Take one drop of Hydrogen Peroxide(H2O2) in your water three times a day for the first day, and increase the amount of drops each single day until you get to 15 drops for each cup of water, three times a day. After about 2 months you will start feeling a lot better, them decrease the amount of drops (one less per day) to about 7-8 drops per cup, 3 times a day. Keep drinking it, it is incredibly good for you in all aspects.
Good luck.
