Find out what works for you. There are many famous remedies like pineapple juice, honey, lemon, tea, water etc but not all of these are good for everyone. I personally find throat lozengers the best because drinking before an important performance PLUS nervousness EQUALS me wanting to PEE just before I go on to sing. So I personally recommend lozengers because they work just as well (and they're great for clearing the sinuses) and they won't make you pee! And sometimes drinking water can make you more thirsty (don't ask me why, but I find that sometimes once I take a sip, I need to keep taking sips as if my throat is trying to rely on liquid to stay clear). Experiment before your rehearsals / lessons so that you are not taking any risks before performances. Great question - I am a singer and I don't discuss this often with singers, but as I said, it's a personal thing. What you SHOULDN'T drink (generally) is milk products that can create excess mucus in the throat. But I find that cup of tea is usually ok (except for the pee factor). :)

In order to have a perfect singing voice, you need to have the talent for the type of music it is. Country songs with a pop voice will strain the vocal cords, but in order to do it just drink honey water or regular water with no ice (room temp.) and make sure there is a humidifier to keep you and your cords hydrated.

I learned this from two voice instructors (one w/ a Master's Degree in voice and the other w/ a Doctorate- so I trust their opinions). Eat an apple before you sing- something about the pH in apples does something to clear out the yucky mucus in your throat. They said it's better for your throat/voice than water- plus an apple won't have you running to the bathroom!

Plain water only and little of that. Hot tea to loosen the throat muscles. A full stomach produces a very bad sound. Eat and drink after a performance.

Well, first you have to have talent. About the only thing I drink is water. Anything else can have an astringent effect, tightening the vocal chords.

Laugh if you will, but another drink is the brine from pickles. A voice teacher I know uses it.
