I took my Jack Russell to get nuetred and was told that he has scabies. I was wondering how this happened? The doctor told me that they gave the dog a skin treatment and he should be brought back in within 7 days...Also, can this be transferred to my children and what should we do to prevent this again for the dog and my family???

I just went thru this problem. Your dog can get scabies (or mange as they call it on animals) from just laying in the same spot another animal did that has them. That simple. Scabies are a microscopic mite. Yes your children and yourself can get them very easily. If you or any of your family members have them, they can look like anything from a rash, pimples, to a sore. It's very common to get a secondary infection from scabies such as infected sores. They usually itch especially when the area they're in gets warm, like when you shower for example. Also, they're more active at night. I would suggest that you treat all family members for scabies. Wash all linens, clothes, pillows, ect. in hot water and hot dryer for at least 20 minutes. Don't forget all beds and stuff animal toys for the dog too. Vaccuum all floors and furniture. You can get a prescription cream from your family doctor called Permathrin for all family members. Also, you can go to www.naturasil.com to purchase a more natural cream for you and your family, shampoo for your dog, and a spray that kills scabies. With your dog getting shots and all of this info., you should be able to rectify the scabies problem and be able to prevent it from happening again. Signs that your dog may be reinfected are....excessive scratching, chewed up ears, scabs on ears, rashes on skin, sores on skin.

the scabies an animal gets is not the same as what a human gets so no it cannot be transfered to your children.

a dog gets scabies when a tiny insect burrows through a layer of skin and lays eggs. the eggs hatch and then the dog is infected. if you make sure to keep him bathed regulary you should never have this problem again.

good luck

He could have gotten it from any infected person, animal or surface he came into contact with. If he's young, he might have already had it from his mother when you aquired him. Discuss further prevention with your vet and pharmacist as there are different products available in different areas..
It is not likely (as has been suggested) that he got this at the vet's.
All surfaces are generally disinfected between patients.
Good luck.

Possibly from another dog? They (the vet) won't admit that tho, because then they have to pay for it.

My dog came home with fleas after being groomed. We don't have a flea problem. I suspected he got the fleas from the groomers. But you can't tell them that.

Yes you wanna keep them separated. just until the dog gets treated but to be on the safe side since mange is a parasite and highly contagious get the cat checked.
