Until you can see your dentist, try these self-care tips for a toothache: Use dental floss to remove any food particles wedged between your teeth. Take an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever to dull the ache. Apply an OTC antiseptic containing benzocaine directly to the irritated tooth and gum to temporarily relieve pain. Direct application of oil of cloves (eugenol) also may help. Don't place aspirin or another painkiller directly against your gums, as it may burn your gum tissue. Swelling, pain when you bite, a foul-tasting discharge and redness indicate infection. See your dentist as soon as possible. Call your dentist if: The pain persists for more than a day or two You have fever with the toothache You have trouble breathing or swallowing

I actually heard about aspirin for years, but I never had a toothache bad enough to try it until a couple weeks ago. Amazing! just take a regular aspirin ( even baby aspirin will work if you can't get past the taste) place it over the tooth or painful area in your mouth and hold it there as it dissolves. Works within minutes!

Pain is an indication that something is wrong and you need to see a Dentist immediately.
Relieving the pain can cause more painful and expensive procedures in the future.
If money is an issure most Dentist will set up a payment plan.

Apparently cloves help toothache. You can buy it in an oil formula and apply it to the painful area. Just a few drops. Also try using Betadine mouth wash. It really does anaesthetise

Cloves can be harsh - go to the chemist and ask for ORAGEL. Its brilliant and numbs the tooth and gum. It has worked for me several times on abcess pain - anything that can cure that is good in my book . (if you need a boost to get rid of the pain so you can sleep maybe - try soluble co-codamol and take 2. They are strong but work instantly) x

Soak some whiskey on a bit of cotton wool and leave it on your tooth for about 10 mins.
It will kill the pain but its not a permanent remidy. Best bet is to go to the dentist. If your like me you will leave it until you really can't function any longer.
Just make sure you don't drink the bottle of whiskey!!!!
