Before every start of the school year I go to Sally Beauty Supply and buy the Tea Tree Oil Shampoo, I have been doing this for 5 years and my kids have never had lice so I know it works! Even when their friends have had them my kids still remained lice free. My daughters teacher told me about the shampoo and I swear it works.

How do you get rid of lice? You can try using RID, it's a lice shampoo, although it doesnt work very good. It's sounds grose and weird but Flea and tick spray for dogs really works to kill lice. How do they come on your hair? From other people who have it. How do you prevent them from coming on your hair ever again? Take care of your hair. Wash and condition it at least once every 2 days. NEVER use anyone else's brush because that's the number 1 way its transferred. If you know of anybody who has lice, don't get to close to their head. Lice can jump.

You need to buy the medicated shampoo that everyone else is recommending. Also make sure you spray your sofas and chairs, beds and anything else in your home with padding. They can live up to two weeks in your home. There is a way that will help you to keep from getting lice, it is a tried and true method. Wash and blow dry your hair daily. That's it - the little suckers can't stand the heat of the blow dryer. Also get one of the electronic combs and comb your hair once a month with it. It will let you know if you need to get the medicated shampoo, by beeping every time it kills one. When my kids were in day care (where there are outbreaks every other month) they never got any of the little suckers, because their physcian recommended that I do these two things. You can try this. There is no longer a stigma to getting head lice - they are not picky on whose head they will dine.

Ah just the thought of lice makes my head itchy!

Well what the other user said about them becoming immune to Nix is true. Ask the pharmacist what they reccommend. Have someone help you use the tiny toothed comb. If you have them, you usually can't see them cause they like to hang out at the nape of the neck. You also have to make sure to get rid of the lice eggs. Cause if you don't then those eggs will hatch and you'll never get rid of em. Wash your sheets, jackets, towels, etc.
And you can't prevent them from coming on your hair ever again.

You need to buy a shampoo called R & C....they seem to have become immuned to Nix. Follow the directions, and also buy a fine toothed metal comb to get all the nits out. You'll have to do this section by section, which takes forever!
Lice tends to like clean hair, also warm areas, such as the nape of the neck and behind the ears, so try wearing your hair up more often

The cheapest way I have found to get rid of lice is....buy a small lice comb a bottle of vegitable oil, and a bottle of dawn dishwashing liquid...soak your childs hair in the oil and leave it in up to 2 hours....it can get messy use a couple towels....then when ready to rinse out use the dawn dishwashing liquid wash hair a couple of times and comb hair with the lice comb....do this every other day for up to 2 weeks to insure all lice is gone...Goodluck

As with fleas, the insects only feed off the host... their eggs are in the bedding, hats, stuffed animals, that have been near the hosts head. All washable items need to be washed in HOT water. Non-washable items should be disposed of or put in a clothes dryer, on HOT, for at least half an hour. Brushes and combs need to be washed, again in HOT water. Lice do tend to like cleaner scalps and hair. Their presence has nothing to do with personal hygiene, which needs to be stressed in the school environment to avoid social discrimination.
Tea Tree oil soap and shampoo tends to work as an insecticide for prevention. R&C, from the pharmacist, with a fine tooth comb, works but is expensive and not recommended for delicate skin. A natural remedy, which worked for me- drench the head in olive oil or vegetable oil, wrap the scalp in plastic with a towel over to keep the heat in, soak like this for half an hour or more and rinse with a mixture of warm water and white vinegar (half and half), comb through with a fine tooth comb and then wash your hair with your regular shampoo. The oil suffocates the insects and the vinegar helps loosen them from the hair shafts. This may need to be repeated once or twice a week for several weeks but it won't harm your hair and in fact is a great way to condition.

You get rid of them by washing your hair in medicated shampoo, RID for example. It is just for lice, just follow directions. You get them from other people, using their brush, wearing their hat, actually all you have to do is sit next to someone and the little suckers jump from head to head, TRUTH. You CANNOT prevent them from happening again.

You can buy many shampoos such as Nix etc at the pharmacy, however, you also need to get them out of your house. Your bedding, cushions and any other furniture item needs to be treated.
I have heard that a home remedy is mayonnaise, however, I have not tried it (thankfully) Some believe that this suffocates the louse.
This is a very pesky problem. You may need to see if anyone you hang out with has the same issue as it can just be passed back and forth. There are home insect bombs that you can also use. Best of luck to you!
