It is normal if she has not had a lot of practice writing it. A lot of children do this! Sometimes they start writing their name at the edge of the paper and then place the remaining letters anywhere else on the page. At least she knows all of the letters in her name. It will just take some practice writing it correctly.
There are a few things that you can do to help her. Write her name out on a 4 x 10 inch heavy duty card stock (upper case first letter followed by lower case letters) using a dark marker. Cut out some tracing paper in strips of 4 x 10. She can use a clipboard to clip her name to with the tracing paper on top. She can then use a pencil to practice tracing her name. You can also write her name several times using a yellow highlighter on paper (This is much easier to follow than dot to dot). She can trace her name on her highlighted name. Once she is familiar with writing her name from left to right, she can practice writing it on lined paper. Explain to her that if she starts to write her name starting on the left side of the paper, she can fit all of the letters working to the right side of the paper. Make a name plate for her bedroom door. If she continues to see her name written correctly, she should soon develop skills to write it correctly. Hope this helps!

I have a son that is Madison's age. I'm teaching him how to wriute his name and he does the same thing. He also writes his letters backwards. I asked his teacher and a couple of my friends that have older children they all told me that this is completely normal. Just keep working with her she will catch on in time.

She'll get the hang of it I remember when my daughter was 5 worrying if she was dyslexic because she wrote her letters backwards my friend Buffy said no she's fine my daughter did that too and she was write she's 7 now and the letters are fine. However when my daughter is tired she doesn't do as well spelling as when she is rested so if your daughter is writing her name after school she may be tired and not focusing as well

It took me a while to get the idea that the sequence of the letters mattered, myself. As I recall, I also had trouble with the difference between b and d, and the difference between p and q. These days they call it dyslexia, and give you a government disability for it. All I got was a remedial reading teacher for one semester. Seems easier, somehow. I was also good a mirror writing once I learned of the difference; used to drive my older sister crazy.
Don't let it worry you.

I think it's normal, either that or my sister isnt normal either. For a while she was writing her name as if she was looking at in a mirror. ACIRE.
Just keep coaching her and keep writing her name with her, beside wherever she writes hers. She will get it ;o)

First, I think it's great that your daughter at 5 can almost spell her difficult name. It seems to me that she has a perceptual problem - perhaps dyslexia. See if the school has testing available to pick this up. If not, a learning center or private psychologist could help in testing her.

My son wrote his name backwards too but now that he is in kindergarten he has been writing it the right way. Just keep emphasizing that we read and write from the left to the right. she will get the hang of it.

Keep coaching her. She'll get it eventually. Based on the spelling, and the fact she puts NOS before MAD, you might speak to her teacher or doctor about dislexia. Best of luck! Hang in there!

Please do not worry about dyslexia yet. This is normal. It is part of the learning process. I work with children and I have seen it a thousand times from witing their names, printing letters and numbers backwards. It will all come in time .
