There are still no OS X viruses in the wild. Symantec has (after spending years and who knows how much money) just claimed to have developed a proof of concept virus*** that doesn't do anything and is not a threat. If anyone tells you that there are Mac viruses, ask them to name one and explain what it does. At best you'll hear about a couple of trojans that couldn't do much of anything either, including their inability to propagate beyond a local network. No viruses = no need for antivirus software.

Symantec and other 'security' vendors try to scare people into buying their software by listing potential vulnerabilities along side actual viruses. This way they can make Windows look like it has more viruses than it actually has and make the Mac OS look like it has more than zero! No OS will ever have zero vulnerabilities, but vulnerabilities are not all equal. They don't necessarily translate into exploits because a high degree of difficulty can make a successful attack just a theoretically possibility.

*** It's looking more and more like this alleged virus is yet another trojan. That means it's just a program disguised as a legitimate application. No OS can ever be 100% secure from those, but if you don't run applications you're not sure are legitimate, you won't have a problem with trojans on any platform.

I've never used an anti-virus program in all my years on Macs. The popularity of the iPod caused a slight increase in the number of viruses being written for Macs, but overall it's still a drop in the bucket compared to PCs. I think you'll be totally fine without one. You don't need to defrag either!

Some people will tell you that since you're running a Mac, you won't have any problems with virii. Guess what: There are computer viruses for every type of computer out there. Yes, the Macs don't have as many virii, but they do exist, and if you get one, they're just as bad as their PC counterparts.

Don't run around the 'net unprotected. Use an antivirus program such as Norton or McAfee.

No, you don't need it. Mac is not susceptible for viruses.
