If your dog has short or sparse hair it could be sunburn. We had a white boxer mix once and her underbelly would burn (turn red) while outside in the summer cause she liked to lay out on the patio. For the most part it's harmless but dogs can develop skin cancer so it'sbest to try and lessen their time out in the sun.
If the red skin is around the bottom/area and seems itchy or bumpy red, then it's most likely an allergic reaction to fleas. In that case you'd need to make sure your dog is flea free with Frontline Plus or Revolution. You can buy those meds at the vet w/o a visit or having to see the dr.

So, you've got a choice: waste a ton of money on different shampoos, creams, ointments, etc. and cause your pet more pain and suffering with the wrong treatments, or spend that money at the vet to get a correct diagnosis and have your pet feeling better in no time.
I think any responsible pet owner would pick the second solution.

The vet is the only solution. Your dogs skin problems could have many many causes and it often takes a while to determine exactly what they are. It could be an allergy, it could be a genetic skin disorder etc etc. Not going to the vet is irresponsible and cruel.

I'm sorry but a vet is the only solution here. It probably has a skin irritation. The vet can proscribe a special cream or something and it will be cheap for them to just tell u that Cuz u can buy it yourself.

bad news caliguy. my dog a border collie got the same way. so i tried allsorts. savlon washes. and aniseptic creams but without success. so i took it to the vet. he said it could be an allergy or possibly mange' he gave me stronghold drops for fleas and ticks (i'd already put him on spot on with no luck. the vet said it was a waste of money anyway). the vet also put him on some steroid tablets. your right 60 quid. and i've got to take the dog back next tuesday who knows how much then. we might be on a piece of belly pork for xmas dinner. hope this helped and all the best with your dog

I'm having some what the same issue right now with my Piper. She's bit the hair off by her tail area and is losing hair on certain spots on her back ,and is constantly scratching. We picked up a shampoo for allergies and hot spots and a topical lotion for hot spots.I'll see what happens in a week ,if she's getting relief. If not then i'll have to take her to the vet.Sometimes you can fix it on your own ,then sometimes you have to suck it up and take your pet to the vet.

If you do not want to take a pet to the vet you should not have got the pet. They need vets, as yours does now.

just call the vet and ask them what they recommend, maybe they can tell you over the phone without looking at the dog. try some really gentle shampoo that has soothing ingredients. i dont know of any brands off hand but i know they make them.
