Several reasons I guess - #1 is there is pain involved, #2 there are risks involved, although in a normal vaginal delivery they are slim, #3 it's an unknown & that is always scary.

There are a lot of unknowns with childbirth. You can read any book and it will give the average, but each woman, pregnancy and birth are different, even for the same woman. Woman could be afraid of the pain, how much will it hurt? Maybe they've heard too many horror stories from other women who have had bad birth experiences. Maybe they don't trust their doctor, hospital, birthing centre, midwife etc. Maybe the mother is not really sure about having a baby in the first place. There are so many reasons why a woman would be afraid of birth. Not everyone is afraid, though.

Why are people afraid? Because you are experiencing something outside of the norm, and like the others have expressed it hurts in most to all cases. You have to understand, childbirth isn't easy, and if you are pregnant, of course you have every right to be scared but you have to understand that women have been giving birth since the beginning of time, you can do it as well as every woman who puts her mind to it!

Because it's painful...VERY painful. Noone looks forward to being in pain or hurting.

Also, For first time mommies, It's something they've never experienced before, That coupled with bringing a child of your own into the world, and knowing that you're going to be responsible for the child for the rest of your life, Gives you more than enough reason to be 'scared' :-)

People are afraid of it especially when they've never gone through it before - fear of the unkown.

As much as a want a baby, I'm horrifed at the thought of all that pain! Hopefully epidurals work realy well lol

Becuase it hurts first of all...but also:

If you are first time mother it's fear of the unkown, you have never experienced it before. And fear of becoming a mom...wondering if you are ready etc.

Last but not least, giving birth is dangerous. Granted the rate of mortality had dropped significantly over the last century but there is always the chance of complications and death for both mommy and baby.

People used to die in child birth that's why. Even though the chance of death nowadays is lower there can still be complications and it does hurt like hell without the epidural which I didn't get because that needle was ******* huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For first time moms it is the fear of the unknown and fear of the pain. Of course it hurts like hell but they have drugs for that if you want them. Its also the next step. Its as real as it gets having to take that little someone home and be responsible for it for the next 18 years.

Its called the fear of the unknown. I was absolutely petrified becasue I didn't know what my body was going to do. I'm sure if I did it a second time I wouldn't be as afraid.
