They assume you have not read it because a lot of christians have the inability to believe that any credit should be given to any beliefs other than their own. One of the ways they can combat this is to call 'non-believers' ignorant of their ways and their literature.
I believe that the real strength in any argument or discussion lies in the ability to be able to present the opposite argument just as well as you can do so for your own. It is hard to dispute a position if you know little about it.
I spent the first 19 years of my life going to church, sunday school and bible study...and have continued to study the bible since then..(not just read it)..purely because I love to learn and it gives me the ability to intelligently discuss such things when confronted by Christians about my Atheist beliefs. The majority of times I have found that I am far better educated about Christianity than most of the people that believe....and I could actually present their own arguments better than they could.
It is my opinion (and folks..it is merely an opinion not a fact) that many people follow the 'Christian' herd because they need accountability in their lives..they need to be told 'don't do that or else'...they have to be told not to murder, not to steal and not to covet thy neighbors wife. Personally..i don't need to be threatened by 'You will spend an eternity burning in hell' in order not to do such things..it's called having morals and a sense of self-responsibility. What does this have to do with having, or not having read and/or studied the bible? Simply stated anyone that has done so, and has also read any amount of other 'translated literature' would also know that you are getting, at the very least, third party information that can be interpreted in many different ways..and can be manipulated to conform with your particular belief....
So...Christians assume you have not read the bible...because it is far easier to degrade your 'biblical' education then it is to come up with a good defense for the lack of their own....

First, many Christians haven't read the Bible. I was raised Catholic and nobody ever asked me to read it, or told me to or whatever. I don't know many people who have actually read it. When I finally did read it as an adult, I personally found all the killing, deceit, treachery, etc, absolutely horrifying. More so than any horror movie I ever saw. That being said, I think you're over generalizing--I mean "Christians" encompasses an awful lot of people. I never knew you existed until now, so I can't be included in your comment.

I think that is ignorance on the part of the Christian assuming that. That also comes from a feeling that they personally own the Bible. It's a closed society, they may think, and they feel they have to indoctrinate you their way only.
It's a sad kind of thing, cause' it can turn so many people off to the true beauty and meaning to that book.

I am not a Christian, but I feel that I can answer for them because it certainly seems they all think alike.
They assume people who are not Christians have not read the bible because they themselves were duped into believing all the myths inside that book. Essentially in their minds they are saying: "I believe this book because I read it, and you are either ignorant or stupid or both if you have read it and do not believe it!"

im sure that not all christians think that
but on their defense, they are probably assuming u havent read the bible becuase you're not of that religion. just like ive never read the Quran, the Tipitaka, or any of the Vedas, and im not going to assume right away that all Muslims, Buddhists or Hindus have read the Bible, just because i wouldnt expect them to. Some people find various religios texts interesting, but some people also read their own religious text and havent explored other ones, like u have
i dont think they are trying to insult u, i think they are just assuming that since u rnt of the christian faith that u havent read the bible.

it really is an extremely good question. Many Christians seem to anticipate that if a Non-Christian study the Bible and do not trust them that the Non-Christian both study the incorrect translation or in basic terms "can't see the actuality because they are blinded by technique of devil".... I study the hot testomony in both English and Koine (New testomony) Greek, so in basic terms HOW am I failing to study the "nicely perfect" version? And in basic terms because i think that Jesus might want to in all likelihood be A God, in basic terms not MY God because I follow my Ancestral Gods does not recommend that I were "blinded" to both the positive AND the hazards of their e book.... notwithstanding if the Christians seem to ignore those self-same disadvantages....

Without more information it's a tough question to offer an answer to.
Perhaps you present yourself as knowing what the Bible means when, in reality, you might not?
A lot of the message in the Bible is meant to guide and instruct the FAITHFUL. The Bible is most effectively read/studied by praying for enlightenment. If you aren't Christian (ie, faithful), what do you think the Bible is saying?

Hi there. In my experience it is because they like to believe that they are the only ones that know what is really in the bible. It angers them that non-believers can study the bible and even, in some cases, know more about it than they do.
It is rather like using their own words against them. They do not like this.
Also, as others have said, they like to think that if you had read the bible you would be a christian like they are.
"If only closed minds came with closed mouths".....too bad.
Good luck and keep on spreading the good word.
Blessings

Because they (some not all) believe that if you read the bible that suddenly you'll "get it" and believe as they do. They can't comprehend the fact that someone can read the bible and still not believe it to be true.
I get the same thing and I have read the bible also.

This depends on why they are saying you haven't read it. I think there's a division between Christians. I myself am a Christian..but I believe differently than most Christians do. I would just ignore them because it's only going to start a fight because they think they're right.
