Hospitals generally cannot refuse to provide emergency medical treatment. For less urgent illnesses, some poor people have insurance coverage through Medicaid or other state/federal funds. Many large cities have free or low-cost clinics. Even so, a lot of poor people in the US do not receive adequate medical care.

You do know the penalty for armed robbery isn't death right? There is another point here, and I don't think you'll be seeing a story on this. Its not easy to take another persons life, even when it happens to cops, who could logically expect something along those line, the cops are given psychological support, in war where again taking of a life is expected, the results are often stress disorders. How much is the civilian going to suffer when the realty hits that they have taken a life? I don't have any pity for the robber, don't get me wrong, but there are more considerations here that the knee jerk response of hurray another one down. Since people do carry in gun free zones its entirely possible it would have happened anyway.

Its not free. But most hospitals cannot turn anyone away if they are unable to pay. They will get care..but still get billed.
Also...we have medicaid programs for the poor that take care of medical bills..including dental. The criteria varies from state to state as to who is eligible.
That comes out in your income Taxes....under FICA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FICA_tax

There are state and county funded hospitals that will not charge if you are poor.
We also have a federal medical program called MedicAid for those who can't afford it but they have to register and qualify.

poor people are taken care of, i know that if it is life threatening the emergency room has to take care of you, for routine health stuff there are clinics that will cover all costs if you make low income requirements.
