When starting a new relationship, one that you hope will become a serious long-term relationship possibly leading to marriage; how long should you wait to have sex?

Do you believe in the old sayings like "why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free". Or just simply that the man will lose interest or not take the woman seriously if sex is offered too soon?

I'm not interested in hearing stories of how one-night stands turned into long-term relationships, because you know that for every time that happened, the person probably had a few other one-night stands where that didn't happen.

Share your opinions please.

Relationships all have timing. We all try to get what we ultimately want. You have heard a dozen times, someone say, they are not ready for marriage, kids, sex ect.... only to meet someone else and do those very things, so fast you don't even know what happened! I have found that for most women, at least, sex is an mental-emotional thing, And men it is a physically one. Find a man that waits and you both will bond emotionally to each other.

If your goal is to have a trusting long lasting committed marriage, you should wait. What a great gift to give to each other, as well as the trust, and self control it takes to wait. Most marriages suffer from sexual problems and thus end in affairs. If sex is based on emotional and spiritual giving then both people benefit.

my wife and I talked a lot on the phone before we ever met. About an hour a day for four months. Then she came to visit for the summer and never left. We waited about four hours and didn't leave the bedroom except to pee or eat for a week.

the key to a relationship isn't sex but conversation. Talk about the stuff that matters to you. religion, politics, sex, sexual fantasies, music, movies, sports, family and education. All important topics that you need to agree on before you move in together.

have sex if you want it, not because you think it will help you catch a man. one thing that can ruin a marrage is when a woman has sex anytime, anywhere, any way the guy wants it until the marrage happens and then stops giving in because she didn't enjoy it to start with.

Make sure he understands that when you say you don't want to do something that you mean it. if you are bi make sure he knows it and if you aren't and have no interest make sure he knows that too.

it's a long process. good luck.

good luck

OK, this is just MY opinion (I'm sure there are plenty who will disagree..) If I'm interested in someone I will get to know them before I even meet them (why waste either's time ??) After talking, emailing, whatever if there IS something there, then it's time to actually meet. If the meeting goes well enough for another, THEN it's time to decide about sex. Personally, if I'm out with someone and DON'T have sex by 3rd/4th date, then I assume that she's really not interested......

Why marry the pig when all you get is a little sausage?

Ok, seriously....

After a few months you should have a good idea where the relationship is going. If not, talk about it.

One should NEVER wait for sex, there is no reason to!

Remember, the test-drive is important!
