Acts 1.
And while they looked stedfastly * toward heaven as he went up *, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

BTW..nowhere does it say that Jesus will stop halfway in the air.

It says he will return in the same way that he left (in the clouds--hidden from view of everyone but just a few faithful ones) and it also says that every eye will see him. Since we know that the Bible doesn't contradict itself, there must be a way to reconsile the two thoughts. Since Jesus gave up his physical existance once and for always, it is not possible to see him physically, so it must be that everyone will see with eyes of understanding that he has turned his attention to the earth to bring about God's will. Also, the first scripture can be explained in that only those few who are really close to him will be able to recognize that he has returned at the beginning. Hope this helps.

He will come back just the same way He left. (This will be His glorious appearing) His return is composed of two returns. The first one He will meet the Christians in the air, those alive and dead in Christ, then return after the GT to step foot on earth and defeat the enemies of God and take His rightful place as King.

He will return after the anit-Christ or the son of perdition has been revealed and after the great tribulation in clouds of glory with the sounding of the last trumpet and a shout and the voice of an arch-angel and everyone will know that it is Him coming.

Matthew 24:3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?"

Matthew 24:24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, 'Look, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. 29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

2 Thessalonians 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

1 Thessalonians 4:16- For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Well at the rapture Jesus doesn't come back to the earth. He calls all those who are saved to meet him in the air. His second coming which will be to the earth he will come back on a white horse along with the saints of God. I think its in Revelations 19.

Jesus told his apostles that he would return during their lifetime; maybe he forgot to set his alarm clock.
