Above are correct. If you not know a lot try using a Linux that runs off the CD. To install Linux you have to partition the Hard Drive with enough room to install Linux. Sometimes you have to search for particular Drivers and Configure certain things and Blah, Blah. I will TRY and find you a link that you look up your system and people tell how they converted. Then you can read and get a good idea what is involved and Run it from CD until you gain more knowledge and are sure you want to mess with it.
This link below give you an idea. I can not find the one I wanted and will keep looking as it lists specific computers and is real good starting point.

The above answers are excellent. My personal favourite for trying out linux is Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com)..dowload the desktop copy and write a cd and boot from the disk..you can experience everything there that way...if you want something like a unix or linux command line simulator on windows try cygwin (www.cygwin.com)

Knoppix, Kubuntu, Linspire, Xandros. Theses are all FREE and you can download them as easily as a mp3 file ( it takes longer though ). You download the image, burn it to a CD, and boot off the CD.
These are WindBlows look-alikes .
They have some good eye candy too.
If you want hard core Linux, try DEBIAN. That is what some of the commercial SERVERS use. All FOURTEEN CD's of it covers most applications.
BTW, these other LINUX clones have Office too. You can replace most of your M$ programs for FREE!!

You might want to consider Linux Red Hat 9. It's pretty user friendly, has a nice GUI. A little different getting the hang of it, but once you do it's a really nice OS.

Try Knoppix... or any newer free version that runs out of RAM... off of a cd. That way, you can try it all you'd like and you won't ever have to re-format your HDD... very nice.
