My best friends husband, who is also my best friend is an alcoholic, he drinks everyday, it is early in the day and he has called me at work, he was already drunk. His doctor has given him less than 2 years to live, if he stops drinking, if not he could drop dead anytime. I bought him the movie MY name is Bill W. it is a movie about alcoholics, he watched it twice so far in one week. he ends up in the hospital 2 - 3 times a month from his body going into spasams and they either detox him or just send him home after a couple of days. his wife is sad all the time and is at her whits end. We are lost and don't know what else to do. I think there should be a place where people like him can be sent to and locked up until they are better, everywhere he has gone to for help he walks out of and goes home, then it starts all over again. Does anyone know of a place that will force him to stay (locked up for his own good)??

Since the dr. told him he has less than 2 years if he stops now or less if he continues to drink, then there is nothing you can do....Alcoholics have to want to stop. No one can make them quit unless he is ready. By nagging him you will encourage him to keep drinking. Some alcoholics when they reach rock bottom will decide to quit. But rock bottom is different for everyone. Rock bottom for one person may mean loosing a great job or even their family. For another it may mean living on the streets homeless to wake them up. For another it may mean a near death experience. So, it is obvious he is not willing to stop, nor has he reached his rock bottom. All you can do is pray for him and be there when he needs you the most. Good luck.

I don't know which country you come from but has he tried rehab centers??

I feel for you really. From my personal experience you can guide/showed them all but in the end an addict MUST be willing to quit. If there is no motivation in him then even locking him up for 10 days to 10 years won't help and he'll start up again.

Try rehabs centers, Alcoholics Anonymous etc. Basically need he needs professional help especially since its serious like you said.

Hope it works out

i know this sounds cruel/ but the only way is to embarrass him in public while he is drunk.
when he passes out for being too drunk/ tie a rope around him and tie him up and let him lie there. when he wakes up he will wonder why he is tied up.
another way is put him on the back of a horse [when he is drunk] he will either sober up quick or get bucked off.
or when he is drunk /tie him up and hang him over a tree limb and let the breeze sober him up.
eventually he will get tired of being tied up [when he is drunk] that he will quit drinking all-together.
