While shaving
While getting an upper body tattoo
During open heart surgery
In the dressing room trying on new shirts

These are the times when it is NOT appropriate for a guy to hang out with his shirt off......
At work - unless you are a gardener, wood chopper. lawn or pool man....
When you are visiting the parents of your wife or girlfriend
When shopping - unless you are buying shirts and are in the dressing rooms
Whilst eating in a restaurant or at a dinner party
At a night club where there is close proximity dancing - unless it is some kinky kind of place
Whilst visiting other people's homes - unless it is the mate having an all male middle of summer/winter barbeque
When your girlfriend/wife invites her friends or parents over
While reading stories to your nieces and nephews
At any important social function - e.g. Christening, Wedding, Birthdays etc.

In your own house - it is generally okay to hang out with your shirt off. In public places - a general rule of thumb is to take a look around you. If you cannot see any male pectoral flesh - then it is not a good idea to explose yours. It can be a real social no-no!

It is only appropriate for a guy to hang out with his shirt off in two situations....on the beach or sauna or pool etc. Also if there are no girls present then it should never be inappropriate.

Well, I think the beach or pool are two places that are indisputably okay. But I also think in your own house or backyard is fair game. Speaking of game, no one really minds at a football game either, especially at a Packers home game (chest painted green/yellow and a cheesehead..hehe)! If you are a runner or biker, tops off to ya!! Doing everyday things like driving, shopping, eating out, etc. does seem a bit under dressed though.

As a 17 year old teenage guy who plays sports and works out, the truth is that it's competition. Whenever we have basketball practice in our school gym, and some girls decide to hang out in the benches, there's always that one guy who in the team who takes his shirt off to show off (sometimes, I initiate it). Then that dude gets all the attention, and everyone else who has a great build to show off as well just follows. You girls gotta know that a guy trains like a ***** to get a good body. It would be such a waste if we don't show it off. :))

Well that depends on whats under the shirt. If you have a 6 pack then you can take it off whenever weather allows and all the ladies get a treat. If you have a keg it would be best to keep your shirt on at ALL TIMES!!!

If you look like Brad Pitt w/o your shirt that is one thing if you look like John Goodman?? No seriously, I agree with the posters about the pool/yard/hot tub thing however, there are some men that should never be seen in public w/o a shirt and sadly they do not actually know who they are...

It's appropriate at a pool or at the beach and MAYBE mowing the lawn if it's very hot. It's always appropriate if the said male is alone in his home as well.

It is appropriate not to wear a shirt when swiming or at the beach-resting in your back yard-taking a bath or sleeping!

Only at the beach or swimming pool. Anywhere else in public it is generally viewed as inappropriate.

If you were at a beach or in your own backyard that would be OK but elsewhere put on a t shirt at least.
