My son is 2 1/2 and he sometimes does this. I think it is because he is getting to the age where he kind of understands about going to the toilet but is still not quite sure how the whole thing works. It is a normal reaction, they watch everyone else in the house going to the toilet in the bathroom and closing the door after them so they are adjusting to the idea that going to the toilet is private.

My daughter does not hide but she waits until I'm on the toilet and she goes in with me squat and make a #2. She is only 17 months but i think she is ready for the potty.

It's a sign of being ready to use the potty, my 2 yr old has been doing this for a while now, she hides behind the curtain or behind the clothes airer. They want privacy!

I think there conscious of what they are doing! It may be good to introduce the potty/toilet, so they feel `grown up`.
After all - it must be hard to `Go` when your being watched!!
My son who`s 4 will insist on having the bathroom door shut, whilst he`s on the toilet!!

lol....they get shy I guess. The same we reason that we like to close the bathroom door. My daughter sometimes hides behind the curtains. I always laugh. I have a 7 mos, I wonder what he will be like.

Well when I was that age I was always embarressed to wear a nappy becuase everyone who is older than you doesn't. You just have to stay calm and don't mention it there fore they wont get embarresed as much. And defently don't tell people you know in front of the child about the nappies it just gets them even more upset/embaressed. From Catriona

I've always heard that, but my daughter has never done it. It's usually casually while playing with her toys or something. But occasionally she will ignore me if I ask her if she did it, which definitely means she did it!

I've never seen this behavior. Perhaps if you have started potty training, then he believes he is doing something wrong when he uses his diaper.
