There are overweight people in the world because our lifestyle has changed from that of our ancestors. While our forebears had to do a lot of manual labor to survive, and often needed high-calorie foods to fuel that labor, our lives today are considerably more sedentary (after all - we're sitting at a computer right now!) However, our eating patterns are largely governed by family tradition, and many of us grew up eating those same high-calorie meals that our grandparents ate to sustain all that hard physical work. Add in the fact that many of us work far more hours and have less and less time to cook, so we tend toward a quickie meal at McD's or Burger King or whatever else is handy. In addition, our busy lifestyles often mean that time for the gym or other self-imposed exercise routines is limited (or even non-existent for many). Input exceeds expenditure, and the excess is fat - simple equation with a not-so-simple remedy.

I wonder just what constitutes "fat" for you.
I find this post interesting coming from someone who claims to be 5'4" and 150-160 lbs. To many that is considered fat. I am 6 feet tall and weigh about 165 and I wear a size 6-8 (just to give you perspective).
People have become spoiled and lazy with the increase in our technological advances such as television and the computer. Video games keep our kids on the couch and out of the sunshine.
People do not get out and exercise and they eat junk.

Obesity has nothing to do with MC Donald's and fast food chains.
The reason there are over weight people in the world ( and certainly there are plenty more starving people) Is a matter of moderation and technology. Over eating and the fact that we don't have to do much walking or general exercise in our daily lives. More forms of transportation, less physical types of jobs, busier lifestyles ( no meal times etc etc) and our general lack of commitment to a healthy lifestyle. As far as obesity being gross.
I find judgment of a person based on their appearance to be much more "gross"

It must be nice to be perfect!!!
There are so many McDonalds, Burger Kings, Arby's, Taco Bells, etc. because we live in a capitalist free society where people get to actually make choices, and lots of people have made the choice to eat at those places.
Too bad you have such a totally narrow view of people and don't appreciate the freedom that Americans enjoy.
Hope one day you gain a few pounds and you get to look in the mirror at yourself with distain.

You are only 5'4" and weigh between 150-160! That is a huuuuuuge *****. You should lay off the supersized big mac meals for a change, then maybe you can wear a bathing suit that doesnt have that fat person skirt on it!

Yah, it's sad. It's not really they can't lose weight but its their willingness to lose it. yah, there isn't enough healthier places.
