That's excellent!

I hereby declare the prohibition on homosexuality to be out of context.
*poof*
Therefore it's not relevant anymore.

... just like when people declare that the prohibition on divorce and women speaking in church are "out of context"

This is fun!!!

Is there any other passage from the bible that people would like to dismiss as "out of context" ?

Maybe like the passages where Jesus says that slavery isn't wrong?

May I dismiss the whole damned book as out of context?

I am curious as to whether or not you've ever made an honest study of the Bible and know of what you speak. I personally do not 'dismiss' things that I don't particularly like. It is not the culture of that time that makes it 'out of context', it is the culture of this time that does. The funny thing about truth is that you can deny it, dismiss it, curse it, but it always remains the untarnished truth. It is possible for people to use Scripture out of context, just like anything else. If you use a 'sound bite' for your purposes and use it to portray something all together different that is not relevant. For example, the women speaking in church that was written in a letter to a specific church where the women were crying out and speaking loudly through the teaching and Paul was admonishing them not to 'show off' with their outcries and also not to distract others from the teaching. Many people don't ever see this, they just say 'ooh, the Bible says that women can't speak in church!'. All I ask is before you speak, know what you are speaking about, all of it. God bless.

I'm not really sure where Jesus said slavery wasn't wrong, but "out of context" doesn't mean it's not relevant, it just means that there's more to the story than what's being taken out of context.

The Bible was written a long time ago by many people. What is the context?

yep, we all do this if we follow the bible - but there is a good deal of stuff in there that is specific to Hebrew culture at the time, and some stuff that is universal non-temporal doctrine. The trick is trying to seperate the two - something no one has succeeded in in history!

I ask God to show me His truth, and to change me (if I do not like something the Bible says) so that I will feel the way God feels about that subject.

yes, this is standard operating procedure for Christians.

but I think we should give them some credit, after all, it has kept logic on the run for 2,000 years.
