Last weekend the boys (9 and 11 yo) used our new hot tub with some of their friends. They had a blast jumping and making angels in the snow (in bare feet and only swim shorts), but when they began to compete who could lie buried in the snow the longest, I felt I had to stop them. I don't want them to get ill or have frostbite. However their friend claimed it was perfectly safe and that his parents let him do it all the time.

Am I being too protective here? Where would you put the limits? How long is it safe to let kids this age be exposed to extreme cold like that?

Thanks for the answers so far.
So, some of you have done it yourself as kids, without getting ill - are there anyone who can tell about kids actually being harmed from extreme snow exposure? Or maybe others that can add to the positive experiences (from their kids or from their own childhood)?

I think you were right to stop it, its not good exposing them to being buried in snow. And parenting advice, next time friend pipes up that his parents let him... say oh i'll just ring your mam and ask her about it. That'll shut him right up

The hot tub at the gym has a sign that states no longer than 10 minutes for adults (an adults only gym). I don't think I would let a three year old in the hot tub at all because of the jets and drains.

I'm not sure how safe it is, but I cant even count how many time I did that when I was a kid! It was so much fun and me and my friends did it all the time. Nothing ever happened to any of us. We never got sick or anything. I say let your kids do it, unless you find something that says otherwise.

No, you're not being too protective. It was actually something I enjoyed doing as a kid, but it can be pretty dangerous. I wouldn't let them do it at all.

Sounds like a bad idea to me. I would imagine that the extremes could be hazardous and would prevent them from feeling the extremes, as well.

I think you should have stopped them. No, you're not being too overprotective. They could get a cold or frostbite.
